Take Underdog Jets Straight Up vs Patriots at Home

An AFC East rivalry game is upon us as the New York Jets (1-1) will play host to the New England Patriots (0-2) on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. Coming into this game carrying a 14-game winning streak against New York Bill Belichick’s team will be looking to score its first win of the season and avoid going into an unimaginable reality for the Patriots – going winless in the first three games.

With the Patriots shown as NFL betting favorites for this game, the Jets will be looking to come away with a strong win at home, the second of their season against a division rivals. It’s no secret that this matchup holds strong seasonal significance for both squads, but especially for New England.

In simple terms, for the Patriots, losing is not an option as a defeat here could very well kill their plans moving forward in the season.

As both squads prepare to square off in Jersey on Sunday, who holds the edge here and what do our NFL odds say?

Winning Only Option for Both Teams

After dropping its first two games against the Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins, respectively, the Patriots could be looking at this game against the Jets as their last chance to gain relevance in the AFC East. Fortunately, they will be facing a team that they know how to beat with ease in the Jets.

New York quarterback QB Zach Wilson still looks and plays like an amateur who snuck his way into a pro team. For every good play he manages to churn out, there’s at least three chances of a negative play – either, a turnover, a sack or an interception.

It’s sad, I know. Believe me, as a Jets fan, I can testify. But, maybe, just maybe, with the help of his defense stepping up once again, Wilson and the Jets could find their way to a victory. By suffocating New England’s offense and not giving it enough time to even think, the Jets will be good to go.

For the Patriots, it will take Mac Jones and his offense to play their smartest football if they wish to put points up on the board and make it out of Jersey with a 1-2 record. Short passes and a strong running game will be key.

Lastly, on defense, breaking the Jets’ offensive line, reaching Wilson and causing him to struggle constantly, all while playing lock-down coverage on Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall, could prove to be the key to keeping New York under siege.

Take Underdog Jets to Win? Yes, and Here’s Why

Defense, defense, defense. That’s the name of the game for the Jets moving forward without Aaron Rodgers, at least until the playoffs. With our NFL betting lines listing the Jets as the underdogs for this AFC East bout, despite being at home and with the better record, I would put my money, trust and everything else on this defense to pull through and earn the W at home.

After that humbling 30-10 defeat at the hands of Dallas last week, New York, and especially its defense will be looking to bounce back in Week 3 and score a much-needed win.

While Wilson will surely continue to struggle trying to be the savior of New York’s offense in the absence of Rodgers, the defense and secondary are elite and they will carry the Jets to victory.

Bet on Under With two Good Defenses

I think we can all agree on two things that make betting on the under that much easier. One, both QBs hitting the field on Sunday are nowhere close to what each team needs right now. And two? This game will be decided by which team’s defense outplays the other.

If I had to pick who had the better weapons on offense, taking out the passers of course, I would go with New York.

In all honesty, though, with Zach Wilson manning the pass, there’s not that much that the rest of New York’s offense can do to carry the load. For New England, the story reads the same way. There are good pieces to work with on offense, but they can’t carry all of the team’s offensive load because of a motionless QB.

When picking the Jets to win the game even if they are NFL Vegas odds underdogs for this matchup, my reasoning stands behind the fact that their defense will end up stealing the show.

Expect a low-scoring affair here, with both teams keeping the score in the low tens, and bet the under at our sportsbook safely.

NFL Pick: Under 36½ (-110)
