Just when the Washington Football Team’s generic name is starting to grow on us, they’re going to switch it for something the fans are going to pick. From this list of over 30 nicknames, a few stand out and have NFL betting odds on them.
Let’s look at which ones are memorable enough to consider putting money on.
The Washington Football Team had a ho-hum but otherwise solid offseason. That should have injected a little bit of excitement into the fanbase, just like these two front-runners should if either is chosen.
Washington Redwolves (+150)
The odds-on betting favorite isn’t bad and it’s quickly become a thing on social media and on the Internet. Talks of the Football Team rebranding as the “Red Wolves” or “Redwolves” have been around since 2019. Plus, who doesn’t think wolves are totally cool?
Washington Redtails (+200)
Next to the Redwolves, the Redtails make the most sense. Washington goes from having a racially insensitive moniker to honoring both World War II soldiers and black veterans. Social media has already started rolling with this.

Best Pick: Redtails +200
Other Pedestrian Possibilities
New franchises have started becoming a bit more creative with its nicknames. See: Seattle Kraken of the NHL and the Panther City Lacrosse Club of the NLL. But if the franchise wants something universal and inoffensive, here are a few picks:
Washington Warriors (+450)
“Warriors” was one of the first nicknames that popped up a few years ago when talks of scrapping the original moniker started gaining traction. The alliteration is nice, but Warriors is just too generic and boring. But that’s kind of been the franchise for most of its existence.
Washington Generals (+500)
Yawn. This is the more generic and inferior war-themed version of the Redtails. I guess it harkens to the time of George Washington. But why not just go an extra step and call it the Colonials? That ought to cause a stir (for all the wrong reasons).
Washington Guardians (+500)
This is another popular moniker that is gaining traction online. It sounds too much like a newspaper or journal. Just like the other two here, there is a good chance this gets picked because it lacks imagination and is super inoffensive.
Best Pick: Guardians +500
Cheering For The Fun Long shots
On the other side, we have plenty of fun monikers that have little to no shot of getting selected. Still, it might be worth betting on a few of these as a souvenir. There are far worse things to wager on.
Washington Lincolns (+1000)
Out of the presidential monikers offered, this by far has the best ring to it. President “Abe” is a universally loved figure and is known as one of America’s greatest heroes even to its ethnic minorities. As far as long shots go, this one has legs.
Washington Roosevelts (+5000)
Lincoln is a superhero and a legend but the “Roosevelts” honor the two great presidents who served. Both Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt a/k/a “FDR” were only second and third to Lincoln in terms of prominence.
Washington Belters (+3000)
The Washington Belters is a perfect nickname as the team can switch to swinging a capella when their football season doesn’t work out. Genius.
If They Want More Controversy …
None of these nicknames will probably be chosen. But you never know! If the Football Team wants to stick it to the social justice crowd, these ones should be on top for consideration:
Washington Renegades (+2500)
Controversial for so many reasons. A renegade is like a fancy word for a rebel. It’s also the nickname of Dallas’s ill-fated XFL team from a few years ago. Given all the chaos that’s been happening in the nation’s capital, picking renegades is a case of “too soon.”
Washington Monuments (+3000)
My personal choice for the “disingenuously offensive” reference to the confederacy and other controversial items in American history. It’d be hilarious if this gets chosen as the team would essentially be counterpunching against the social justice activists.
