NHL Tuesday Betting Preview: Can Maple Leafs Recover?

Toronto Has Huge Issues in Net

It wouldn’t be a NHL season without seemingly endless controversy surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs. Toronto’s issue has been goaltending, which has turned into a total mess. The Maple Leafs have lost two straight to non-playoff teams and host the surprising Dallas Stars in a huge Tuesday game, which is one of the best on the day’s docket.

Let’s preview all 11 of Tuesday’s games to help you out if you’re betting online:

Dallas Stars vs Toronto Maple Leafs

Both the Dallas Stars and Toronto Maple Leafs are riding two-game losing streaks heading into Tuesday’s matchup. It’s a big game for each squad as the Stars still need to secure a playoff spot and the Maple Leafs have to find some kind of stability in net before the postseason.

Toronto is coming off a pair of ugly back-to-back losses against the Arizona Coyotes and Buffalo Sabres. Leafs fans are (rightfully) grumbling about the struggles of goaltenders Petr Mrazek and Jack Campbell. Dallas has played just twice in the past week and, most recently, got shellacked by the relatively low-scoring New York Rangers. Jake Oettinger has been great all season, but he has been relied upon heavily and could benefit from the Stars’ sparse schedule.

The Maple Leafs are solid home favorites with Vegas, still believing all of their talent will continue to overcome subpar goaltending. For this game, that may be true but it might not be the case going forward. Go with Toronto straight-up.

Arizona Coyotes vs Montreal Canadiens

A day after using a Lawson Crouse hat trick to sneak by the Ottawa Senators, the Arizona Coyotes visit the Montreal Canadiens who have cooled down a bit after a red-hot start to Martin St. Louis’ tenure with the Habs. Arizona has won five of six and is scoring goals at a shocking pace considering how much trouble they’ve had on offense all season.

Arizona, with the rest disadvantage and Karel Vejmelka likely in goal, is a sizable road underdog here. Montreal isn’t exactly a sure thing, even at home, so consider taking the Coyotes straight-up for the value. The over is a really good bet too.

Anaheim Ducks vs New York Rangers

The wheels have fallen off the proverbial bus for the Anaheim Ducks, who have lost four games in a row and hardly resemble the team that won eight straight games in October and November. They’ll try to avoid a winless road trip as they visit the New York Rangers and Vezina Trophy candidate Igor Shesterkin.

New York exploded for seven goals in a huge win over the Dallas Stars on Saturday, but scoring has been hard to come by all season for the Rangers. It might not be easy to come by against Anaheim, per se, but New York’s stellar defense and goaltending should be able to shut down the Ducks’ scuffling attack.

Take the Rangers on the puckline as big home favorites on the BetUS sportsbook. New York is 19-5-3 at home and Anaheim is surely tired from a long trip. Take the under too as neither of these teams is particularly dynamic on offense.

New York Islanders vs Washington Capitals

It’s still going to take a miracle for the New York Islanders to make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference, but at least they’ve turned things around a bit, winning three straight and four of five. The Washington Capitals are also playing well, with four wins in their last five games. They’ve won each of Vitek Vanecek’s last four starts and he should be between the pipes again on Tuesday.

New York’s offense has really stepped up to finally give Ilya Sorokin and former Capital Semyon Varlamov the support they’ve needed all season. The Islanders have scored four-plus goals in four-consecutive games.

Washington is a solid home favorite. If you want a value play, consider the Islanders straight-up with Sorokin in net. The Capitals have looked better recently but they’re still a little banged up.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Nashville Predators

This should be a great battle between the surging Pittsburgh Penguins and Nashville Predators. Tristan Jarry and balanced offensive production have keyed a pair of Penguins’ wins over contenders in the Vegas Golden Knights and Carolina Hurricanes. Nashville has ridden particularly high-scoring performances to four wins in its last five games.

With both Jarry and Juuse Saros in net, this game could be pretty low-scoring so the under is a move. Also, since the line is essentially a pick’em, you can’t go wrong with either team. So, you should take the Penguins because Jarry is slightly better and because Pittsburgh is oozing with high-end talent. The Penguins are a ridiculous 19-6-4 on the road.

Vegas Golden Knights vs Winnipeg Jets

Panic time has officially started for the Vegas Golden Knights. After seeming like a playoff lock, Vegas is on a four-game losing streak and is clinging onto the final wild card spot in the Western Conference by one point, although Vegas has played the second-most games in NHL.

The Winnipeg Jets sit a bunch of points behind the Golden Knights and are still holding out playoff hopes, even if it’s unlikely the Jets jump all the teams they need to in order to sneak in. Beating Vegas in a critical head-to-head game would be a great start for Winnipeg, which has won three of four, including a pair of impressive wins over the Tampa Bay Lightning and St. Louis Blues.

Winnipeg is slightly favored at home but this one is close to being an even split. Consider going with the Jets because Vegas is still down starting goalie Robin Lehner and clearly misses Mark Stone more than initially expected.

Boston Bruins vs Chicago Blackhawks

The Boston Bruins keep rolling, having won nine of their last 11 games and continuing to put pressure on the top teams in the Atlantic Division. They’ll try to grab another two points against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Chicago has been scoring (and giving up) a ton of goals lately so this one could be a real barn-burner. Boston continues to dominate whenever Jeremy Swayman starts: They have won his last eight starts. Goaltending was a concern for them before Tuukka Rask re-retired and now it has turned into a huge strength.

Boston is a big road favorite on the NHL betting lines and you should take the Bruins on the puckline with how good they’ve been. The over is also a great move since Chicago’s last six games have gone over.

Detroit Red Wings vs Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers will try to extend the Detroit Red Wings’ losing streak to a season-worst six consecutive games on Tuesday night. Edmonton has back-to-back wins over the Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals following a short skid. The Oilers basically need points in every game down the stretch to make sure they keep pace in the bunched-up Western Conference wild card race.

Jay Woodcroft’s team is a huge home favorite and should win on the puckline with how poorly Detroit has been playing on both ends of the ice.

New Jersey Devils vs Vancouver Canucks

It’s a Hughes brothers rematch as Jack and the New Jersey Devils head west to take on Quinn and the Vancouver Canucks. New Jersey won the previous matchup 7-2 and has won three of four while Vancouver has dropped two straight. Both teams have relied heavily on their goalies — Nico Daws for the Devils and Thatcher Demko for the Canucks — over the past few weeks, so they each could get rested Tuesday. If so, it would make a big difference.

The Canucks are solidly favored at home but New Jersey is an intriguing underdog pick. The Devils have played really good hockey recently and Daws has been at the center of that. Take New Jersey if Daws starts and take the Canucks if Jon Gillies starts.

Colorado Avalanche vs Los Angeles Kings

The Colorado Avalanche got a much-needed win over the Calgary Flames their last time out and will try to get another two points against a solid Los Angeles Kings team that just beat the Florida Panthers and is comfortably in a playoff spot.

Colorado had lost four of five but shutting out the Flames might be the spark to get the Avalanche going in the right direction again. The Avalanche are comfortable favorites despite being on the road and are a good bet on the puckline, even with the Kings being one of the NHL’s biggest surprises. The over could be the move as well because Colorado due for a big offensive night.

Florida Panthers vs San Jose Sharks

The Florida Panthers’ five-game winning streak came to an end on Sunday against the Los Angeles Kings in a shootout while the San Jose Sharks snapped a three-game skid with consecutive wins over the Kings. Now, the Panthers will look to start a new streak as they and Sharks legend Joe Thornton head to San Jose.

Florida is one of the league’s best teams and the Sharks are one of the Western Conference’s worst, so it makes sense that the Panthers are such heavy favorites. But, with how the Sharks looked against Los Angeles last week and over the weekend, it might make sense to take a dart on San Jose’s moneyline for value. Florida should have the goalie advantage so it’s not a surefire bet, but there isn’t great value in the Panthers on the puckline.
