Avalanche Best Bet for Outright Game 3 Win vs Stars

MacKinnon Piling Up Points on Home Ice

The Dallas Stars let a commanding lead disappear once again when facing the rival Colorado Avalanche, but this time it did not cost them the victory. Esa Lindell’s empty-net goal allowed Dallas to even the Stanley Cup playoff series 1-1 with the next two games in Denver. The NHL odds have the Avalanche favored at home yet again in Game 3.

Stars vs Avalanche Odds and Spreads

Heiskanen Provides Some Power

Most of the attention coming into this series was focused on the vaunted Colorado power play. However, it was Dallas that used the man-advantage situations to take control.

Defenseman Miko Heiskanen had a pair of power-play goals to give Dallas the 3-0 lead for the second game in a row. Tyler Seguin then scored with Colorado on the power play to make it a 4-0 game late in the second period.

That proved to be just enough as Colorado pulled within a goal with 3:54 left to play. Less than a minute later, Wyatt Johnston was sent to the penalty box to give the Avalanche a chance to tie the game. Jake Oettinger had saves on Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon before Lindell iced the game with an empty-net goal.

Betting Avs a Must at Ball Arena

No team won more frequently on home ice during the regular season than the Colorado Avalanche.

Colorado won both of its home games on the way to eliminating the Winnipeg Jets in the first round. The Avalanche are 24-6 outright in its last 30 games as a home favorite. One of those losses did come against Dallas but the odds are not on the side of the visiting Stars coming into Game 3.

Here are some numbers to consider, Nathan MacKinnon has 35 goals and 58 assists in 43 home games this season. Despite missing 12 games, Valeri Nichuskin has scored 23 times at Ball Arena, Cale Makar has 14 goals and 40 assists while Miko Rantanen has contributed 19 goals and 40 assists.

Only the St. Louis Blues have covered more frequently this season at home than the Avalanche so that is what the Stars will be dealing with in Games 3 and 4. Dallas has won just two of its last seven games as a road underdog.

Here are some numbers to consider for those who bet online:

  • Six of the last nine times that Dallas played at Colorado, the game went over the total.
  • Colorado is 49-22-5 as a favorite.
  • Dallas has a 3-6-2 record as the underdog.
  • The Avalanche are 26-17 against the puck line at home.
  • Dallas has covered in 23 of 44 road games.
  • Colorado has seen 23 home games land over the total.
  • The total has gone under in 13 of the last 18 games for the Stars.
  • Six of Colorado’s last seven games went over the total.

Avalanche vs Stars Injury Update

Both teams got key forwards back for Game 2 with Joel Kiviranta scoring a goal for Colorado and Mason Marchment having an assist for Dallas.

Jonathan Drouin, Gabriel Landeskog and Logan O’Connor are out for the Avalanche while defenseman Jani Hakanpaa is out for Dallas.

What to Look for in Game 3: Avs To Take Care of Business at Home

Opening a series on the road can be a risky proposition if the series goes the distance. However, after splitting the first two games in Dallas, Colorado has a chance to take command if it can win the next two games at home.

Colorado finished the regular season by going 3-3-1 in its last seven home games. That looked like ancient history when the Avalanche outscored Winnipeg 11-3 in the two home games in that series.

Recent games in this series have tended to land over the total and that might not bode well for the Stars as Colorado prefers a wide-open style of play. A key for Dallas is that Jake Oettinger is in net for the Stars and he is one of the best goalies in the NHL.

Go with Colorado to take control in Game 3, although Oettinger could keep things close. Don’t be surprised to see the same land over the 6½-goal total.
