Sometimes in life you are the car. Other times you are the bug.
Saturday, the two collide in Denver.
The Colorado Avalanche play host to the Calgary Flames.
The Western Conference rivals reside in significantly different strata. Colorado is a Stanley Cup contender whereas Calgary is likely to be a seller at the trade deadline. As such, the Avalanche is one of today’s NHL best bets.
Even though both teams played – and won – Friday night, the Avalanche and Flames
are entering facing adversity. Colorado will not have a key player for an indeterminate period of time while the Sword of Damocles may be swinging over Calgary’s roster.
Flames vs Avalanche Best Bets
The Avalanche are -1½ puck line and -165 moneyline favorites in NHL betting odds and should be among the smart picks in NHL predictions even though this will be Colorado’s second without defenseman Samuel Girard, who announced prior to Friday’s 3-2 win over Minnesota that he was voluntarily entering the NHL-NHLPA Player Assistance Program to receive treatment for anxiety, depression, and alcohol abuse.

Girard, who has a slashline of one goal and three assists for four points in 15 games, has logged 309:12 of ice time. Of that, 259:46 has come at five-on-five. Another 36:58 came on the penalty kill, and the last 12:28 occurred on the power play.
Roughly a quarter into the season, Calgary has not been able to develop and sustain positive traction. The Flames have alternated wins and losses in their last four games, although they are coming off a wild 7-4 win over the Stars.
But their inconsistency has caused the rumor mill to churn. Defenseman Nikita Zadorov has reportedly requested a trade, and his agent, Dan Milstein, subsequently posted on Twitter his client would be a perfect fit for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
It is believed that Zadorov’s fellow blueliners, Noah Hanifin and Chris Tanev, and two-way center Elias Lindholm could be traded by the deadline since all four are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents this summer.
