Avalanche vs. Jets Game 5: Who Will Win? NHL Expert Picks and Predictions

The Colorado Avalanche will be among most NHL expert picks to win their fourth straight contest and advance to the second round of the Western Conference playoffs when they visit the Winnipeg Jets for Game 5 on Tuesday.

The Avalanche were beaten 7-6 in a wild Game 1, but have outscored the Jets 16-5 white winning the next three contests. Colorado has outshot Winnipeg 153-104 in the series after the 5-1 victory in Denver on Sunday.

“I’ve really liked all four games from our group,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar told reporters. “We made some mistakes in Game 1. We made less in Game 2. We made less in Game 3. We probably made less here (Sunday) on the defensive side of things.”

The Jets, who finished tied with the Florida Panthers for the fewest goals allowed in the regular season (198), have not been able to deal with Colorado’s speed throughout the series.

“The problems are self-inflicted,” Winnipeg coach Rick Bowness told reporters.

The Jets are +800 in the Las Vegas hockey odds to correct the errors and win the series while the Avalanche are -1100 to move on.

Avalanche vs Jets Odds and Spreads

  • Colorado defenseman Cale Makar has registered 73 points in 65 career playoff games, including eight in this series.
  • Over bettors are 6-1 at the sportsbook in the last seven Winnipeg games, but 34-39-10 on the season.
  • The Avalanche are 6-for-15 on the power play in the series and 9-of-11 on the kill.
  • Jets forward Nino Niederreiter was fourth on the team in shots (170) during the regular season, but has managed four in this series.
  • The over is 5-1-3 in the last nine meetings after under-bettors scored barely on Sunday.

Under Bettors Need Vezina Hellebuyck

Winnipeg goalie Connor Hellebuyck recorded Vezina Trophy-worthy numbers in the regular season with 37 wins and a .921 save percentage.

The 30-year-old has not been able to come close to matching those statistics in the first four games, allowing 19 goals with an .870 SP. But it has been more about his defense giving up too many prime chances and 15 power plays to the Avs.

Laurent Brossoit replaced Hellebuyck for the third period on Sunday, stopping all four shots he faced. If the Jets and the under (6 ½) are going to be worthy of your sport bets on Tuesday, Hellebuyck must be at his best.

Nichushkin Winning Prop Bets

If you had bets on Valeri Nichushkin scoring goals in this series, you are smiling.

The talented Russian recorded a goal in each of the first three games and notched a hat trick in Sunday’s victory. Nichushkin had 28 goals in 54 regular-season games, missing time to enter the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.

“He’s been awesome for us,” Colorado defenseman Makar told reporters. “Obviously, he’s a train driving that front end right now.”

Nichushkin was tied with Edmonton’s Zach Hyman (six) for the most goals in the playoffs through Sunday. Artturi Lehkonen is second on the Avs with four goals.

Jets Worthy of One More Bet?

Winnipeg tied for the fourth-most points in the league during the regular season. That was not among many experts’ NHL predictions back in early October.

The Jets appeared to be fading with an 0-5-1 stretch to end March, but won eight in a row to finish the regular season. They have been a plucky bunch, but do they have life left in them to spring one more big effort?

Winnipeg is 28-12-3 at home this season, which could make the Jets a decent value bet as an underdog. But the Avalanche are rolling.

The Jets may not have Vladislav Namestnikov on Tuesday. The veteran forward was hit in the face by a deflected shot on Sunday and taken to the hospital for observation.
