Back Vancouver with McDavid ‘Iffy’ for Edmonton

In a pivotal Pacific Division tilt, we are backing the Vancouver Canucks to upset the Edmonton Oilers on April 13. Vancouver is a slight underdog as the visitors. But Edmonton could be without superstar center Connor McDavid, who continues to deal with a lower-body injury. He sat out of the Arizona game on Friday night. Monitor the NHL updates today to see what his status will be as the lines could shift.

Canucks vs Oilers Game Information

  • Game: Canucks (48-22-9) vs Oilers (48-24-6)
  • Date/Time: April 13, 10 p.m. ET
  • Location: Rogers Place, Edmonton, AB
  • Canucks vs Oilers Live Stream: NHL.com

Vancouver is +120 on the moneyline to beat Edmonton while its puckline of +1½ is at -200. We’d rather take the dog shot given the NHL odds. Edmonton is only 20-33 (20-24-9) all-time without McDavid. The total is set at 6½ but this may be too high given recent trends. The “under” has cashed in four of Vancouver’s last six road games.

Canucks vs Oilers Odds and Spreads

  • Vancouver is 4-2 in its last six games following a straight-up loss
  • Edmonton is 1-4 in its last five games against Vancouver

  • The Oilers are 3-5 in their last eight games when lined at -130 to -150
  • The ‘under’ is 4-1-1 in the Oilers’ last six conference games
  • The total has gone under in five of Vancouver’s last six games when playing with two days’ rest

  • Canucks F Brock Boeser has 17 goals in 24 division games this season

Canucks vs Oilers ML Pick: Canucks (+120)

Edmonton has been in better form than Vancouver lately. And the Canucks’ 1-5 record in their last six games as an underdog makes it daunting to bet online on them. But this is a matchup Vancouver is comfortable with. The Canucks have kicked the Oilers’ butts even if their last meeting was back on November 6.

And without McDavid, the Oilers would be thinner up front. With the NHL playoffs approaching, they may err on the side of caution and let him recover. On the other hand, the Canucks have one of the deepest forward cores in the NHL. That’s why they score the third-most goals as a visitor (3.3). And defensively, Vancouver gives up the second-fewest scoring chances on 5-on-5.

Even without star goalie Thatcher Demko, the Canucks can rely on Casey DeSmith against Edmonton. He’s posted a 92.1% save percentage in four games against the Oilers. This is a tough matchup but we’re putting our money on the underdogs.

Canucks vs Oilers O/U Pick: Under 6½ (-120)

Another solid NHL pick here is for the total to go under 6½. We don’t see Edmonton scoring its usual average of 4+ goals against Vancouver. The Canucks will buckle down and neutralize the Oilers should McDavid not play. A six-goal total is a likely outcome.

Canucks vs Oilers Player Prop Pick: Brock Boeser – Over ½ Point

Brock Boeser has six goals in his three games against Edmonton this season. He has not been this hot lately. But facing a team he’s lit up should give him the confidence to produce. We like for him to record a point, at least.
