Bet on Jets to Continue Success Against Oilers

Winnipeg Has Typically Beaten Edmonton Despite Odds

The odds for the NHL currently favor the Edmonton Oilers, the visiting team, against the Winnipeg Jets. However, the Jets have won eight of their last 11 games against the Oilers. Even with Edmonton boasting the two best scorers in the game in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, the Jets have figured out how to consistently beat them. At underdog betting odds, we like Winnipeg to keep doing it.

Edmonton Nearly Back to Winning Ways

The Oilers are 5-3-0 since firing Jay Woodcroft. In this span, they are +9, averaging 4.5 goals per game, and firing with a 29.1% power play percentage (PP%). This sounds like the Edmonton of last season. A return to form for McDavid, 15 points in this span, is a good sign. But let’s examine the team’s losses.

Edmonton’s three losses all came on the road. The Oilers were outscored 17-10 and their PP was held to 1-of-12. Additionally, the team’s PDO was 89.9 namely because of subpar goaltending rearing its ugly head. As prolific as the team can get, its netminding is always an issue.

The team’s goaltending has a disastrous 87% save percentage (SV%) and -15.9 goals saved above average, which are both last in the league. The Oilers will need to consistently score 4+ goals to win games, especially as chalk. That’s not something we’re comfortable betting on online.

Jets Have a Hellebuyck

Winnipeg is 8-3 (8-2-1) against Edmonton in their last 11 games. It has held the mighty Oilers offense to under three goals on average. The power play is “only” 23.8%, which is manageable. And a lot of this is thanks to Connor Hellebuyck in goal.

The former Vezina Trophy winner has overcome a rough start and looks to be in top form. In fact, he began to shake off the cobwebs in his first game against Edmonton. Despite allowing an early goal, he stopped 38 of Edmonton’s 40 shots to get the win. He’s posted a 92.2% SV% with a 9-3-1 record in his last 13 starts. So long as he’s guarding the net, the Jets could be one of the best hockey bets today.

And in front of him, Winnipeg is averaging nearly 3.5 goals per home game. This is despite a measly 15.8% PP%. The Jets have plenty of scorers across three lines and this depth, combined with Hellebuyck’s goaltending, makes the Jets a solid NHL pick.

Contrasting Totals Clash

The totals have gone over in six of Edmonton’s last seven games but under in five of Winnipeg’s last six. Against each other, the total has gone under in four of the last six.

Back Winnipeg for Upset

As far as NHL predictions, this is nearly a 50/50 type of game. So we’ll take the plus odds on Winnipeg if they stay at that. The Jets have more depth, better goaltending, and superior 5-on-5 play. Edmonton may score a goal or two on the PP but Winnipeg is better equipped to win.
