Better Bet on Washington Against Chicago in Back-to-Back

Teams playing on the second night of a back-to-back go at it. The Washington Capitals are favored by the odds after blanking the division-leading New York Rangers. But the Chicago Blackhawks also came off their own victory, 3-1 against St. Louis. With both getting no rest, we’d rather bet on the puck line. Washington could be profitable here as one of the best NHL hockey bets for Dec. 10.

Which Team Plays Better Without Rest?

Here is the hot question: how do being on the second night of a back-to-back impact these teams? Washington is unbeaten: 3-0 under these conditions and all on the road. It beat New Jersey, the Islanders, and Anaheim scoring no fewer than four goals in each game. Not bad for an “old” team.

Better Bet on Washington Against Chicago in Back-to-Back

As for the Blackhawks, they are winless: 0-4 when having no rest. They lost both games at home against New Jersey and Buffalo. These opposing records contribute to why they are underdogs on the NHL lines this Sunday. This and the team likely going to Arvid Soderblom in net.

Soderblom is 1-4 (1-3-1) at home with an 88.7% save percentage (SV%) and a 3.52 goals-against average (GAA). This is a far cry from Petr Mrazek who is 4-3 with a 93.9% SV% and a 2.16 GAA. Chicago beat St. Louis by holding it to just one goal. The Blackhawks average just over 2.5 goals at home. They will need to keep it tight again.

Capitals Overachieving Because of Goaltending

Washington could get fraud-checked here if the NHL odds are one thing. This team is overperforming due to some hot goaltending from Charlie Lindgren. The former Canadien has a 93.1% SV% both on the road and at home. He’s been a reason why Washington has a winning record despite getting outplayed.

The Capitals are 9-6 (9-5-1) when getting outshot by opponents. On the road, the Capitals are 5-5 despite averaging 2.6 goals on 26 shots against 3.3 goals on nearly 30 shots. But with Lindgren playing Saturday, it will likely be Darcy Kuemper in goal. And he’s half of what Lindgren is at this point.

Kuemper has an 86.2% SV% on the road while allowing over four goals on average. He got chased from the net in his last road start. It’s tough to bet online on Washington as chalk if he gets the nod.

Totals Trend ‘Under’ Except in This Matchup

The totals have gone under in four of Chicago’s last five games and five of Washington’s last seven road games. But in these teams’ last five meetings in Chicago, the total has gone over.

Capitals vs Blackhawks Betting Lines

Capitals vs Blackhawks Game Prediction

Predicted Score: Capitals 3, Blackhawks 1

While we’re tempted to fade both goaltenders here, there is a good chance they outperform their unflattering trends. Kuemper is a solid veteran and will play better than his stats. Washington has been prolific when playing with no rest but Chicago has been impotent offensively. Bet the ‘under’.

NHL Pick: Capitals, Blackhawks Under 6

Back Blackhawks or Pass

Our NHL pick is with Washington to beat and even blow Chicago out. But given the lines, we’d rather bet Washington on the puck line. We’re going out on a limb that Kuemper returns to form and the Caps stay hot when going off with no rest.

NHL Pick: Washington Capitals +1½ (+160)
