Detroit Trying To Snap 6-Game Losing Streak
The Blackhawks are on their way to missing the playoffs for the fifth time in the last six seasons and the way things are going, Detroit could also be missing the postseason once again.
Chicago snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-0 win over Ottawa with Seth Jones scoring twice and Alex Stalock stopping 35 shots. Detroit has lost six straight games and is six points out of the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Blackhawks are one of three teams yet to reach 10 wins on the road while Detroit is 15-12-4 at home.
When looking at some of the NHL news, Chicago continues to play without center and team captain Jonathan Toews. Fellow forwards Colin Blackwell and Reese Johnson are also out as is defenseman Andreas Englund.
For Detroit, center Michael Rasmussen is out for the season.
According to the NHL playoff odds, the Red Wings are priced at +25000 and the Blackhawks at +100000 in the odds to win the Stanley Cup title.
Power Outage in Chicago
The top two scorers on the Blackhawks play for playoff-bound teams with Max Domi recently being traded to Central Division-leading Dallas and Patrick Kane, one of the top scorers in franchise history, now a member of the New York Rangers. With Toews out of action, Chicago is without three of its top four scorers.
It should not be a surprise that Chicago is struggling to score. The Blackhawks have two goals on its last 15 power-play opportunities over the last five games.
Andreas Athanasiou and Tyler Johnson have the power-play goals while defenseman Seth Jones has four of the 11 goals during that time.
Tough Stretch for Detroit Captain
It wasn’t that long ago that Detroit Red Wings forward and captain Dylan Larkin went from having five goals in two games at the NHL All-Star Game to have six goals in four games to put Detroit in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Larkin has had trouble maintaining that pace. He had one goal over the last eight games. During a current six-game losing streak, Larkin had one game, coming on the power play against the New York Islanders, and no assists.
Larkin is also -8 during that span as the playoff hopes are starting to fade after a five-game winning streak in February put the Red Wings among the teams vying for a wild-card spot.
Detroit’s David Perron gave the Red Wings the early lead the last time out against Philadelphia.
