Bruins to Stay Alive With Low-Scoring Win vs Panthers

It took a point-blank save in the closing seconds by goalie Jeremy Swayman for the Boston Bruins to stave off elimination and send the second-round series back to Boston. The Bruins will need to do it again as the betting underdog in Game 6. The NHL betting line lists visiting Florida as the favorite in Friday’s game.

Florida has won its last four playoff games in Boston, outscoring the Bruins 9-4 in Games 3 and 4 at TD Garden to take command of the series. Boston has won its first two elimination games in this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The NHL betting odds have Florida priced at -150 to win Game 6 and punch its ticket to the Eastern Conference final. Boston has +130 odds to send the series to a seventh game.

There were +425 odds for the Panthers to win the series in six games before the series got underway.

Florida is second only to the Dallas Stars at +275 in the best odds to win the Stanley Cup. Boston is well back at +3000 in the championship odds. Florida leads the way at +110 to represent the Eastern Conference in the Stanley Cup Final with the Bruins having the longest odds at +1000.

Panthers vs Bruins Odds and Spreads

Panthers: Another Chance to Seal the Deal

Florida won both games in last year’s series with the Bruins that were decided by one goal and had captured 13 of its last 15 one-goal affairs in the postseason before being held to one goal in the Game 5 loss. Florida was favored by the Vegas NHL odds in that game

The Panthers outshot the Bruins 17-8 after falling behind 2-1 midway through the second period. Florida had three chances to tie the game with the man advantage but managed just four shots on the three power plays.

The power play was unstoppable in Game 3 as the Panthers scored four times on six man-advantage situations. On those six power plays, Florida fired 11 shots on Boston goalie Jeremy Swayman. It has been more of a struggle in the last two games.

Florida is just 1-for-10 on the power play in Games 4 and 5 as Swayman has stopped 16 of the 17 shots when Florida has the extra skate.

The total has gone over in six of Florida’s last eight games.

Will the Captain Be Back for Bruins?

The extra day of rest might be coming at the perfect time for Bruins captain Brad Marchand.

This is the only time in this series that there are two days between games so perhaps that will allow Marchand to return to action.

Marchand left Game 3 after being hit in the head by Florida’s Sam Bennett. He missed Games 4 and 5. However, he did make the trip to Florida for Game 5 before being ruled out.

Boston hasn’t scored more than two goals in each of the last four games so it would be a huge bonus if Marchand, the all-time leading goal scorer in franchise playoff history, can return to the ice.

Fourteen of Boston’s last 20 games went under the total and the play of the Boston goalies is a major reason why.

The Bruins have lost all three of their games this season as a home underdog with two of those defeats coming in this series.

Florida has won 18 of its last 21 games as the road favorite, with the Panthers covering against the puck line in 14 of those games.

Here are some numbers to consider for those who bet online:

  • Thirteen of the last 20 games between the Bruins and the Panthers went over the total.
  • Florida is 52-23-2 as the favorite this season.
  • The Bruins are 8-6-4 as the underdog.
  • Boston is only 21-26 against the puck line at home.
  • Florida has covered 29 of 45 road games.
  • Only 17 of the Panthers’ 45 road games landed over the total.
  • The total has gone under in four of Boston’s last five home games.
  • Five of Florida’s last seven games as the favorite went over the Las Vegas odds total.

What to Look for in Game 6: Now or Never for Bruins

Boston is at home with a chance to steal a page from Florida’s 2023 playoff script. The Bruins led the 2023 first-round series 3-1 with Game 5 at home. Florida would win three games in a row in the hockey playoffs, two in Boston, to stun the Bruins. If Boston can win on Friday, the Bruins will have a chance to return the favor.

Florida has had 11 more power plays in the series, but power plays are 7-5 in Florida’s favor in the two games won by the Bruins. Boston has hurt itself with three too many men on the ice penalties in the series.

Boston has a losing record at home in this season’s playoffs. However, Game 5 was the first time since the series opener when it looked like the teams were evenly matched. Don’t be surprised to see the third game in a row go under the 5.5-goal total.

There isn’t much value to go with the Bruins to cover at -210 as the 1.5-goal underdog but going with the Bruins to win outright could pay off in the end.
