Canadiens and Sabres Abuse Goaltenders
The Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres have a few things in common lately: goals. Either they score a lot of them or let their opponents tally aplenty. It’s no surprise that most of their recent games have gone over the totals, especially when playing their conference and division rivals. NHL lines expect another high-scoring game here, which also favors Buffalo on the moneyline.
Canadiens Just Having Fun
It has been another long season for the Canadiens. But that’s no reason for the team’s young players to go out there and put on a show. Montreal did just that as it lit up Columbus 8-2. Rafael Harvey-Pinard had himself a game as it was Montreal’s fourth game with 4+ goals in its last seven.

In fact, Montreal has been scoring a lot more and is putting up over three goals per game this 2023. That’s up from 2.59 in 2022. Combined with its porous defense and inconsistent goaltending, eight of its last 11 games have gone over the total. Betting online on the ‘over’ is typically the best play when it comes to this team.
But if Montreal can get solid play from Sam Montembault, its NHL odds of winning go up a bit. The 26-year-old has put up some stellar outings, which has led to Montreal upsetting the likes of Tampa Bay and New Jersey. He’s their goalie of the future and he should keep starting.
Will Sabres Get More of That?
Speaking of heroic goaltending, Eric Comrie delivered one effort for the Sabres just as they needed it. The Sabres blanked the Islanders 2-0 as Comrie stopped 26 shots for his first shutout of the season. This was a good confidence booster for the man that got left in the net for all 10 of Dallas’ goals earlier in the month.
Buffalo has had to rely on goaltending and play sharper defense as its offense has all but dried up. Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin have gone cold, hence why Buffalo is scoring 2.69 goals per game this month. That’s 27th in the NHL and a far cry from the 3.76 it averaged prior.
But when it comes to this team, the “over: on the total is one of the best NHL picks. Most of Buffalo’s games still yield high scores thanks to the shoddy goaltending and/or defending. Five of its last six games have gone over the total. Unless Comrie can pull off an encore, this upcoming game should be more of the same.

Montreal and Buffalo’s games have been going over lately. The total has gone over in 12 of Montreal’s last 16 conference games. Similarly, 11 of Buffalo’s last 15 division games have. The Habs are 2-5 in their last seven games in Buffalo.
