Capital Gains Unlikely vs Rangers in Low-Scoring Game 2

The Washington Capitals and New York Rangers will each continue their quest to make it past the first round of the playoffs when they clash in Game 2 on Tuesday. After the Capitals just made it into the postseason with a win in their final regular-season game, they stumbled in their first game against Eastern-Conference winner New York, which won 4-1.

Washington will be hoping for better results the second time around, but the Rangers have been nearly unstoppable at home with a 30-11-0 record. NHL odds have New York as a favorite once again in what should be another lower-scoring matchup.

Washington managed to earn a playoff spot after defeating the Philadelphia Flyers in the regular-season finale, but it wasn’t by way of its offense.

The Capitals ended the regular season with the fifth-worst offense in the NHL, averaging 2.63 goals a game, and that stuck with them through the end of the season. Washington scored two or fewer goals in 10 of its final 11 games of the regular season and only managed to light the lamp once against the Rangers in the playoff series opener.

Despite the slow offense, the Caps won four of their final five regular-season games by way of their defense, holding opponents to 1.6 goals a game and posting a shutout. With the offense struggling, that defense will be needed if Washington wants to be able to keep up with New York.

History Repeating for Metro Rivals?

Tuesday’s matchup will be the sixth time the Capitals and Rangers have met this season and Washington will be looking to even the series once again in the playoffs.

The two finished the regular season tied at two games apiece, and four of the five games have gone under Tuesday’s NHL line of 5 ½ goals. Despite the Rangers finishing the regular season averaging 3.39 goals for seventh in the league, Washington held them to 2.25 goals a game in the regular season – the same number the Capitals managed in the regular season.

Washington will hope to slow down the Rangers a bit more in the second game of the playoffs after allowing four goals in the opener, but with the Capitals’ offense still having issues, New York should still be able to hold them off as well.

Rangers to Prevail at MSG

Washington will be hoping to get back on the right track after ending the regular season on a high note, but with the way its offense is playing, it’s likely to have a tough time keeping up with New York.

Expected Rangers starter Igor Shesterkin is also performing well, recording a .965 save percentage in his last three starts, and he should continue to make scoring difficult for the Capitals. Washington’s defense has been its main positive recently, and it should do just enough to keep this game under the total, but likely not enough to hold off the Rangers.

Back the under from the sportsbook once again in game two between the Capitals and Rangers as New York looks to go up 2-0 in the series.
