Rangers Try to Get Comfortable at MSG
It is not often that the New Jersey Devils are ahead of the New York Rangers in the Metropolitan Division when the teams meet. Not only does New Jersey have a better record, but the division-leading Devils are 12 points ahead of the Rangers.
New Jersey has the best road record in the NHL with a 9-1-0 mark while the Rangers are just 4-4-3 at home. The Devils are +12 in shots per game on the road and have allowed the second-fewest goals per game on the road. The Devils have won nine games in a row on the road, three shy of the NHL record shared by the 2005-06 Detroit Red Wings and 2006-07 Buffalo Sabres.
Only Philadelphia and Arizona average fewer goals per game on home ice than the Rangers, and with star defenseman Adam Fox listed as questionable due to illness, scoring chances could be harder to come by if he is sidelined. The Rangers opened a four-game homestand with a 4-3 loss to Edmonton by giving up four goals in the third period.
“These are big points. We have to move forward, but obviously upset to lose two points today.”

Even with those numbers, the Rangers are favored by the sportsbook to move over .500 at home.
According to the NHL playoff odds, the Devils (+1400) are tied for fifth in the odds to win the Stanley Cup. The Rangers (+2000) are tied for 10th.

Defense, Defense, Defense
While some of the young players are producing on a regular basis, with Jack Hughes, Fabian Zetterlund and Dawson Mercer among the top scorers, the key to the Devils’ rise to the top of the Metropolitan Division standings has been the play in their own end.
The Devils have allowed two goals or less in each of the last eight games. It helps that New Jersey is playing with the lead as the Devils have trailed for just 24 seconds in the last three road games.
New Jersey has used the same 18 skaters in each of the last 13 games and that has helped the Devils pile up the points even while playing without key offseason acquisition Ondrej Palat.

Rangers Could be Shorthanded
Facing one of the NHL’s hottest teams with two key defensemen questionable is not a winning formula.
Fox not only leads New York in time on ice, but he is also tied for the team high with 24 points. His 15 points in 12 games in November are the most on the team and he has assisted on four of the seven power-play goals in November.
Defenseman Ryan Lindgren, one of New York’s most reliable penalty killers, is questionable with an upper-body issue. Lindgren has missed two games during the month. If they can’t go, that could result in more ice time for captain Jacob Trouba, whose defensive rating of -8 is the worst on the team over the last 12 games. He has been on the ice for 13 goals against and five goals scored by the Rangers over the last 12 games.
The NHL betting lines total has gone under in five of the last seven games for the Rangers.
