First-of-Month Mismatch?

One-Sided Affair?

The Dallas Stars are fighting with very competitive teams atop the NHL Central Division. At the same time, the Anaheim Ducks are terrible, eyeing an excellent lottery pick in the off-season. Statistically, this game appears very one-sided, although the Stars’ recent record and uncertainty in the net might cause some concern.

Perhaps this game is as one-sided as the stats and records suggest. Review the recent trends, scores, and odds before making any selections in this Thursday’s tilt.

Ducks are the Worst

The Anaheim Ducks are actually the worst team in the NHL, entering Thursday’s matchup with an awful 6-15-2 record. Anaheim’s lost its previous three games, four of the last five.

Here’s a fun fact about the pathetic performance of the Ducks. In the last 72 games against teams with winning records, Anaheim is 12-60. That’s a win every six games.

Anaheim is averaging 2.48 goals per game (30.1 shots), while surrendering 4.13 goals (37.2 shots). Special teams aren’t anything special, a power plays converting just 15.2 percent of its chances (10 goals). Penalty killers are awful, too, with 28 opposition goals with a “kill rate” of 66.3%

Trevor Zegras (eight goals, 12 assists) steals the headlines, but Troy Terry leads the Ducks in scoring (10 goals, 14 assists).

What’s worse here is both goaltender John Gibson and (former Dallas) defenseman John Klingberg are listed as day-to-day, and might not go. Anthony Stolarz would get the start in goal (2-3-0, 3.75 goals-against average, .894 save percentage).

They’re the Shooting Stars

The Dallas Stars enter Thursday at 13-6-4, having split their last four. The Stars have faced Central Division rivals of late, including the Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche (twice), St. Louis Blues, Winnipeg Jets, and lowly Chicago Blackhawks.

With their leading scorer, Jason Robertson, and third-leading scorer, Roope Hintz, having been signed long-term extensions, Robertson is leading the team (19 goals, 17 assists, 36 points). Hintz has 24 points (eight goals, 16 assists) in 22 games.

Ranked second in the league in goals (3.83 goals/game), Dallas is exactly a goal a game better than its opponents (2.83 goals/game). Special teams have been excellent so far, with a power play converting at 28.8% (19 goals). Penalty killers are doing a decent job, with an 83.3% effectiveness (15 goals against).

Health of Jake Oettinger (illness) may affect his availability in this game. Scott Wedgewood has started the last two games, and once against the Ducks if Oettinger can’t go.

Wedgewood is 5-4-1, 3.07 goals-against average (.906 save percentage). Oettinger, meanwhile, is 8-2-3, 2.52 GAA, .917 save percentage.
