As the saying goes, styles make fights.

They also make for terrific hockey games.

Flyers Interesting Bet to Skate Past Penguins in NHL Odds for Dec. 2

Take, for instance, Saturdayt’s Philadelphia Flyers-Pittsburgh Penguins game at PPG Paints Arena. The older, star-laden Penguins employ a skilled, attacking style, while the rebuilding Flyers are a heavy, defensive-oriented squad that wants to physically wear down opponents.

Theoretically, it should make for compelling viewing. And interesting decision-making for bettors making wagers on NHL spread picks. Especially when considering the fact that not much separates the Penguins and Flyers. Pittsburgh has scored 69 goals and allowed 57, while Philadelphia has scored 67 times and been scored on 66 times.

Flyers vs Penguins Best Bets

The Penguins enter the game favored in the moneyline (-175) and puckline (-1½), according to the sportsbook. The in the over-under, per NHL odds, sits at 6½ goals.

So what does that mean for NHL against the spread picks?

Glad you asked.

The Flyers are playing pretty well as they are 6-3-1 in their last 10, although Philadelphia is coming off a 4-3 overtime loss to the struggling New Jersey Devils.

In the game, the Flyers lost Garnet Hathaway was ejected in the first period for boarding Devils defenseman Luke Hughes for boarding, and head coach John Tortorella benched left winger Joel Farabee.

During his post-practice availability Friday, Tortorella told reporters he and Farabee “had a two-second discussion as we passed ways in the hallway. That’s all that needed to be done,” and added that he believed the forward will “be fine.”

The coach was far more expansive on his thoughts on the Hathaway ejection and the league’s de-emphasis on hitting.

Whereas the Flyers appear to be building some positive traction, the Penguins have continued their season-long inconsistency. Pittsburgh is 5-4-1 in its last 10 and, for the entirety of the season, is 11-10-1, although it should be noted that the Penguins are coming off a 4-2 win over Tampa Bay Thursday, a game in which goaltender Tristan Jarry made 39 saves and became the 14th goalie in NHL history to score a goal.

Among the issues facing the Penguins is a surprisingly inept power play. Pittsburgh ranks 27th in the league with an 11.9 percent conversion rate on the man advantage.

NHL Pick: Philadelphia Flyers +155
