End of the Road for Philly, Chicago

Young Forwards Could Steal Show

It’s been a season to forget for both the Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks. However, both teams are coming off victories as they prepare to play their final game of the 2023-23 season.

Owen Tippett scored in overtime as the Flyers edged the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets. Tippett scored twice to give him 26 goals, the second most on the Flyers team.

Chicago topped the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2 as Petr Mrazek made 38 saves. That leaves Pittsburgh a point behind the New York Islanders for the final available playoff spot.

Only the Columbus Blue Jackets have fewer road wins among Eastern Conference teams than the 12 picked up by the Flyers while Chicago is 14-23-3 at home.

The Flyers are 30th and the Blackhawks 31st out of 32 NHL teams in power-play success rate since the start of March, so keep that in mind when making NHL picks.

When looking at some of the NHL news, defensemen Tony DeAngelo and Nick Seeler are questionable for the Flyers.

For Chicago, winger Jujhar Khaira is questionable. Forwards Colin Blackwell, Philipp Kurachev and Taylor Raddysh are out for the season.

Limping to the Finish

It seems like years have passed since the Flyers opened the 2022-23 season with three straight wins and that included victories over playoff-bound New Jersey Devils and Tampa Bay Lightning teams.

Other than one stretch in late December and early January when the Flyers went 7-1, that was the highlight of a difficult season in John Tortorella’s first season at the helm of the Flyers.

Philadelphia had lost seven games in a row before Tuesday’s win over Columbus.

About the only good news is that there has been a chance for Tippett and other young forwards like Morgan Frost and Noah Cates to get quality ice time. Tippett and Frost are tied for the team lead with three goals in April with Cates matching Joel Farabee with a team-leading three assists.

Four of Philadelphia’s last six games went under the NHL betting lines total as have five of the last six against teams from the Central Division

Catching a Draft

The reality is that the worst thing that the Chicago Blackhawks can do on Thursday is win.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have the fewest points in the NHL (57) with two games left to play. Chicago and Anaheim each have 58 points with one game remaining so the odds for the upcoming NHL Draft Lottery will be impacted by what happens on Thursday.

The top pick in the draft is going to be Connor Bedard. He is being mentioned in the same breath as Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby when it comes to his potential as a franchise-changing player.

The Blackhawks are 2-11 over the last 13 games so they are certainly doing everything they can to secure the highest pick possible.

The Las Vegas odds total has gone over in six of the last seven games played by the Blackhawks.
