When the schedule was released, NHL betting fans looked at it as an early season playoff matchup.
The Colorado Avalanche vs the Minnesota Wild.
And why not?
The Avalanche have made the playoffs six seasons in a row while Minnesota qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs four straight years.
Alas, the best-laid plans.
Colorado has won 12-of-18 to start the season. By comparison, the Wild have dropped 12-of-17. Which hasn’t gone unnoticed by general manager Bill Guerin.
“The one thing that hasn’t been there is our compete,” Guerin told Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli on the Frankly Speaking With Frank Seravalli Podcast. “Everyone needs a kick in the ass sometimes.”
All of which makes for easy decisions in today’s hockey bets.
Avalanche vs Wild Best Bets
There are reasons that Colorado is the puckline favorite in NHL picks against the spread.
Colorado entered the game having won four-of-five, including a 5-2 triumph over the Canucks Wednesday night. Prior to that game, the Avalanche called up Riley Tufte from their AHL affiliate. The player-personnel decision paid off as Tufte scored the game-winning goal 32 seconds into the third period.
Over the five game stretch, the Avalanche have scored 27 goals, an average of 5.4 goals per game. In that same span, they have yielded only 12 goals, 2.4 goals per game.
In short: Things are going well.
Which is more than can be said for the Wild.
Minnesota has dropped five-in-a-row and 11-out-of-15. The Wild have a -15 goal differential, which is tied for sixth-worst in the NHL. Minnesota has scored only 53 goals this season, which is an average of 3.12 per game. However, the Wild are surrendering four goals per game. It is usually a problem when a team allows more goals than it scores.
It becomes even more suboptimal when factoring in that the Wild have the NHL’s worst penalty kill, with a 65.5 percent success rate. Additionally, Minnesota’s power play ranks 24th in the league with a 15.6 conversion rate.
NHL Pick: Colorado Avalanche ML (-130)
