Hurricanes Road Pick vs Desperate Islanders in Game 3
The New York Islanders have nine skaters who have appeared in more than 40 career playoff games and that experience is never more needed than after squandering a three-goal lead the last time out against the favored Carolina Hurricanes.
Carolina has won eight of 10 playoff games, including four of the five road contests in the two previous postseason series. The Islanders did win two of the three matchups during the regular season. When looking at NHL odds only the New York Rangers are more prohibitive favorites than the Hurricanes with the series odds moving to -1800 after winning the first two games.
The Hurricanes head into Game 3 as the road favorite. Carolina is priced at -160 to win the game outright and it could be enticing to go with the Hurricanes at +165 to cover against the 1½-goal puck line. The Islanders have won their last three games as the home underdog so take a look at the +140 odds for New York to get back into the series.
When looking at the NHL futures odds, the Hurricanes are first at +450 in the odds of winning the Stanley Cup. The Islanders come in at +15000 in the championship odds.

Hurricanes vs Islanders Odds and Spreads
All Hands on Deck for Hurricanes
It is pretty hard to win at this time of the year without contributions up and down the lineup.
Carolina has been getting help from more than just its stars with 13 players having at least one point and eight different goal scorers in the first two games of the series.
Andrei Svechnikov, who is back after missing 23 games in the regular season, and trade-deadline acquisition Jake Guentzel are among the Hurricanes with multiple points in the series. Jack Drury had a pair of assists and a +3 defensive rating. Perhaps he has some of the clutch genes that his uncle, Chris Drury, displayed in his NHL career. Seth Jarvis and defenseman Brady Skjei are tied for the team lead with three points for the Hurricanes.
More Heartbreak for the Isles
There might not be a team that has lost more hard-fought games than the Islanders.
At one point in the regular season, the Islanders lost seven of 10 one-goal games and their 16 overtime losses were the most in the regular season. If the Islanders can get this game to overtime after losing 3-1 and 5-3 in the first two games, the good news is that there is no 3-on-3 in overtime in the playoffs.
Expect to see the veterans on the Islanders to play as if it were an elimination game because falling down 0-3 to the Hurricanes might be all she wrote for New York. With only five forwards and two defensemen signed through next season, time is running out for the core group with the Islanders.
A Look at the Betting Trends
Carolina had the second-most road wins in the Eastern Conference during the regular season while the Islanders were a much better team at home than on the road, so it will be interesting to see how this game plays out.
Here are some numbers to consider for those who bet online.
- Carolina is 51-26-7 as a favorite.
- The Islanders are 19-25-10 as the underdog.
- The Islanders have seen 21 of 41 home games land over the total.
- The Hurricanes have won 11 of their last 12 road games against the Islanders.
- The total has gone under in four of the last six games for the Islanders.
- Four of the last five times that the Islanders have been the underdog, the game went over the total.
Hurricanes vs Islanders Injury Update
The reports were not positive regarding Carolina defenseman Brett Pesce after he was injured in Game 2. While he is listed as questionable, it seems likely that he will miss the rest of this series. Forward Jesper Fast is questionable for the Hurricanes.
Brett Pesce, who suffered a non-contact injury turning up the ice in his own end during Game 2 — officially “lower body” — is likely to miss the rest of this series, per source. Timeframe beyond that still unclear, looks like a couple weeks at the least.

Defenseman Scott Mayfield is out for the Islanders.
What to Look for
The Islanders have hung around against the Hurricanes in the first two games and this series would have a different vibe to it had the Islanders not allowed the last five goals after taking a 3-0 lead in Game 2.
The Islanders have only converted on 11.5% of their power plays in the last 10 games against the Hurricanes. The good news is that the power play is clicking at 33% in the series, but the bad news is that the Islanders have had the man advantage just three times.
Carolina hasn’t had any issues winning on the road against New York and outshot the Islanders 39-12 in the last game. New York should be able to keep it close again but the Hurricanes just look like the better team.
