Hurricanes to Stave Off Elimination, Avoid Sweep by Rangers

Seven of Last Eight Meetings Decided by One Goal

When the series between Metropolitan Division heavyweights got underway, the biggest difference between the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Rangers was in goal. That is just how things have played out as New York’s Igor Shesterkin has stopped 99 of 104 shots in the last two games to give the Rangers the commanding 3-0 lead. The NHL odds have the Hurricanes favored to win Game 4 and send the series back to Madison Square Garden.

Seven of the last eight games between the Hurricanes and the Rangers have been decided by one goal and that includes all three games in this series. The road team has won six of the last nine games between the teams.

Rangers vs Hurricanes Odds And Spread

Rangers Finding a Way

The New York Rangers are just fine playing in games that come down to the wire.

After rolling past Washington 4-1 in its 2024 playoff opener, the Rangers have won six games by a total of eight goals.

The last three games have been decided by one goal and it would be four in a row if not for an empty-net goal by Jack Roslovic with 51 seconds left in the series clincher against the Washington Capitals.

The Rangers had gone 36 consecutive series without sweeping their opponents. Now they are a win away from making it back-to-back four-game sweeps.

The last time the Rangers opened the playoffs with seven straight wins was in 1994, and that happens to be the last time they won the Stanley Cup.

Canes Pushed to the Brink

The good news is that the Carolina Hurricanes held the red-hot Rangers’ power play scoreless on four opportunities.

However, the Hurricanes are 0-for-15 on the power play in the series and gave up a short-handed goal in Game 3 to Chris Kreider.

It is not a result of a lack of opportunities as Carolina was credited with 11 shots on goal on its five man-advantage chances in Game 3.

Despite outshooting the Rangers 47-25 and winning 61% of the faceoffs, Carolina lost again in overtime on one of the prettiest game-winning goals you will see.

Carolina is 8-2 outright and 6-4 against the puck line in its last 10 games as a home favorite. The Rangers have now covered in each of the last eight contests as the road underdog.

Here are some numbers to consider for those who bet online:

  • Carolina is 53-30-9 as a favorite.
  • The Rangers are 12-6-2 when listed as the underdog.
  • New York has covered in 25 of 44 road games with 23 of those games landing over the total.
  • Just 18 of 45 games on home ice for Carolina went over the total.
  • The total has gone over in four of New York’s last six games.
  • Fifteen of the Rangers’ last 21 games against Eastern Conference teams went over the total.
  • Four of Carolina’s last seven games went over the total.

Will Eight Be Enough for the Rangers?

We have been scouring the Internet for social media posts from the last time the Rangers swept their first two playoff opponents with little luck, since it last happened in 1937 with two-game sweeps against the Toronto Maple Leafs and the unforgettable Montreal Maroons.

Those who jumped on the +850 odds for the Rangers to sweep the Hurricanes have to be loving life right now

The Rangers go after their 10th win in a row and look to improve to 6-1 in their last seven games in Carolina.

The Hurricanes had won five home games in a row before the overtime loss in Game 3.

Carolina continues to play without defenseman Brett Pesce and forward Jesper Fast.
