Will the Canadiens Make Fools of the Hurricanes?
The Montreal Canadiens play host to the Carolina Hurricanes as sizable underdogs this April Fools’ Day. Carolina is a Stanley Cup contender that’s struggling — just 8-9 (8-8-1) in the last 17 games with the same amount of goals scored and allowed (2.71 per game). Montreal has been atrocious since March: 4-12 (4-10-2) but can they wreak havoc on the NHL lines?
Hurricanes Losing Momentum
Averaging fewer than three goals per game just as the playoffs are starting is not ideal for Carolina. Getting shut out by Tampa Bay and New Jersey is already worrying. But losing to Anaheim and Detroit by scoring two goals in each game is panic-worthy. And even scarier is the fact that Carolina is averaging just 2.17 goals on even strength.

As such, most of Carolina’s games have been low-scoring affairs. The total went under in four of its last six games making it a hot bet online. Several of Carolina’s top scorers like Martin Necas are going through a rough patch on 5-on-5. He has 16 points, eight from the power play, in his last 17 games. But he’s only shooting at 8.5 percent and he has a -7 plus/minus in this span.
And the issues don’t stop there. Frederik Andersen is slowing down in the crease. He’s 5-5-1 in his last 11 starts with an 89.2 save percent. Maybe facing a hapless team like Montreal will get his and Carolina’s confidence back. They need it now or they will make unflattering NHL news come the postseason.

Canadiens Can Pull off Upsets But …
Don’t be betting online on Montreal recklessly based on their long lines. Montreal is always an underdog against a playoff-caliber team. It upset Tampa Bay as a 2-1 underdog and Pittsburgh at +280. But Montreal is still just 26-48 (26-42-6) as an underdog. And at home, the “Habs” are just 19-18 on the puckline.
This team can score goals, unlike Montreal, but it also gives up a lot. Montreal averaged a whole four goals against per game during March. It allowed four or more goals against the likes of Florida (twice), Tampa Bay, and Boston. See a trend here?
If Montreal is to flourish as an underdog NHL pick, it will need one of its goaltenders to channel their inner Patrick Roy. Sam Montembault is capable of some stellar outings though he did get lit up for six goals in his last start against Carolina.

The Hurricanes have won five straight games against Montreal. The Canadiens’ last win against Carolina was in February 2020 at home. But this is just one of two wins in their last seven hosting the Hurricanes.

Hurricanes vs Canadiens Picks and Prediction
Montreal is injury-plagued and Martin St. Louis is just out there letting the kids get ice time. So pardon them for their error-prone play. The Canadiens can score though and Carolina is laboring on their end. So the best bet here based on the NHL odds is for Montreal to keep this one a one-goal game.
Montreal is listed at +225 in our Vegas NHL lines. This means that if you wager $100 on the Canadiens, you have a chance to win $225. Carolina is -265, offering a chance to win $38 on a $100 wager.
The implied probability attached to the betting lines gives Montreal a 30.77% chance to win, with the Hurricanes at 72.06%.
