Rangers Looks to Derail Hurricanes
Will the Carolina Hurricanes ever lose again? They take an 11-game winning streak into Tuesday’s matchup at the New York Rangers.
Carolina’s last regulation loss came to the Arizona Coyotes on Nov. 23 and since then the Hurricanes are 11-0-2. The Rangers notched their 12th road win with a 5-3 victory at the Florida Panthers on Sunday, but they have been ordinary at home (8-7-4).
A power-play goal by Carolina’s Martin Necas with 4:28 left in the third period forced overtime on Sunday with Antii Raanta making three saves in the shootout. Andrei Svechnikov’s shootout goal lifted Carolina to its franchise-record 11th win in a row.
Carolina will continue to be without forwards Ondrej Kase and Max Pacioretty, defenseman Jake Gardiner and goalie Frederik Andersen.
According to the NHL playoff odds, the Hurricanes (+900) are tied for third in the odds to win the Stanley Cup. The Rangers are tied for 10th at +2000.

Carolina Point Streak at 17 Games
Carolina is checking all of the boxes during its 11-game winning streak and in the 17 straight games without a regulation loss. A win on Tuesday would move Carolina into the top 10 for the longest winning streak in NHL history.

In those 17 games, the Hurricanes are in the top 10 in both power-play and penalty-killing percentage, are winning 51% of the faceoffs and are third in the NHL with a 2.24 goals-against average.
The biggest surprise is the play of rookie goalie Pyotr Kochetkov. He is 8-0-2 during this run and among goalies with at least 10 games played since Nov. 24, only Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy has a better goals-against average than Kochetkov’s mark of 1.80. Antti Raanta is coming on strong with five straight wins.
Thirteen different players have at least two goals during those 17 games with Necas leading the way with seven. Stefan Noesen, Andrei Svechnikov and Jordan Staal have six goals each.
Nine of Carolina’s last 12 games against teams from the Eastern Conference have headed under the Las Vegas odds total.
Trying to Find the Back of the Net
The Rangers have hit a bit of a rough patch offensively with 2.6 goals per game over the last five ranking 26th out of 32 NHL teams.
The Rangers are fortunate that they picked up points in three of those five games, especially since they are killing off just 69% of the opposing team’s man advantage while scoring on just three of 21 power-play opportunities.
Alexis Lafreniere, Vitali Krovsov, Filip Chytil and Jimmy Vesey have combined for no goals and one assist over those five games. That is putting pressure on veterans Vincent Trocheck, Mika Zibanejad (two scored twice in Sunday’s win over Florida), Chris Krieder and Artemi Panarin to carry the offensive load.
The NHL betting lines total has gone under in five of the Rangers’ last seven games against Carolina.
