Vegas Looks To Quell Upset Talks Against Winnipeg
There tends to be a notable upset in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Going by the NHL lines, there is chatter among fans and media members that the Winnipeg Jets could be that underdog against the Vegas Golden Knights. Winnipeg holds a few advantages over Vegas, namely in goal with Connor Hellebuyck. But the Knights are the better team and should establish themselves quickly.
Jets Have Recipe to be Underdog Winners
When it comes to underdogs that can bark in the playoffs, there are two notable aspects that the Winnipeg Jets possess: 1) a handful of All-Stars that can create explosive offense; and 2) an elite goaltender who can steal a playoff series. That’s why the Jets are just slight underdogs on the series’ online sports betting odds.

But it’s not that simple. For one, the Jets got swept by the Golden Knights in the regular season (0-2-1). Hellebuyck allowed seven goals on 80 shots and his 3.40 goals-against average (GAA) is his fourth-worst against teams he faced twice or more. Also, the Jets’ offense managed just 2.34 goals per 60 minutes on 5-on-5.
These won’t cut it. The Jets either have to expose one of Vegas’s goaltenders or Hellebuyck will have to stand tall for an upset to materialize. Fortunately for Winnipeg, it will go against a familiar goaltender in Laurent Brossoit. This could be beneficial when betting online.
Golden Knights May Have Weakness in Goal
A lot of consensus NHL picks are against the Vegas Golden Knights due to one glaring hole: goaltending. With Logan Thompson out indefinitely, the Knights have to make do with a tandem of Brossoit and Jonathan Quick. The former is a career backup and the latter is on his last legs.
Brossoit has also not fared well against his former team. In three starts versus the Jets, Brossoit is 0-1-2 with a 3.82 GAA and a measly 88 percent save percentage. Lately, the 30-year-old has played well for Vegas and is in peak form entering the postseason. So if momentum counts for anything, Brossoit should improve on his subpar stats when meeting Winnipeg.
The NHL news also reports on the return of several key players, like Vegas captain Mark Stone. The oft-injured forward had 17 goals in 43 games prior to going on the long-term injured reserve (LTIR). He may be rusty given his last game came on Jan. 12. But at his best, he is a two-way force that will give Vegas an edge when he’s on the ice.
