Nothing stays static forever.
Just look at the Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning.
For the better part of decade, the Penguins and Lightning resided atop the National Hockey League. And why not? Both franchises boasted galaxies of stars.
But as time passed, stars aged and key depth players left. And now, these one-time powers hang around NHL .500 and are outside of the top eight in the Eastern Conference.
So, then, the question becomes how to view this game through the prism of the best hockey bets today. Especially on a night in which there are only four games on the schedule.

Penguins vs Lightning Best Bets
Entering the season, both teams were viewed as potential Stanley Cup Playoff teams but not necessarily Stanley Cup contenders. The Lightning were +2000 in NHL future odds while the Penguins checked in at +3300.
A little more than a quarter of the way into the season, the teams have lived up to observers and oddsmakers’ thought processes. Tampa’s 27 points is fifth-most in the Atlantic Division, while Pittsburgh’s 25 points is sixth in the Metropolitan. Moreover, the Lightning are ninth in the East and Pittsburgh is 11th.
Pittsburgh is 13-11 on the puck line in the Las Vegas odds while Tampa Bay is 13-13.
As far as the under-over numbers when betting online, the Penguins 7-15-2 while the Lightning are 12-12-2.
Tampa is coming into the game having shut out Dallas 4-0 Monday night. The win snapped a four-game losing streak.
The Penguins have matched the Lightning in inconsistency. Pittsburgh has lost its last two games – 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday night and 2-1 in overtime on Monday night – to Philadelphia, and have dropped seven of its last nine.
But Penguins GM Kyle Dubas still believes in his team.
“Because of our goaltending, because of our penalty kill, and because of our ability at even strength, we’ve been able to stay in the race despite the power play going into week three or four of not being able to find a way,” Dubas told Josh Getzoff, SportsNet Pittsburgh’s play-by-play announcer, according to Taylor Haase of DKPittsburghSports.com. “If we can get the power play sorted out and we continue to build on those other areas of our game, I think we’re going to be in a good spot.”
