Decline happens slowly, then all at once.

The Tampa Bay Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins are slowly declining.

Two of the NHL’s preeminent franchises for more than a decade have struggled in the opening quarter of the 2023-24 season. Entering the day, Tampa Bay is fifth in the Atlantic Division with an 8-5-5 record and Pittsburgh’s 10-10-1 mark is seventh in the Metropolitan Division.

Accordingly, rhetorical questions are being asked by journalists about what happened to two of the league’s heavyweights. And literal queries are being posed by bettors as to how to view the game in today’s Vegas’ NHL odds.

Penguins vs Lightning Best Bets

The Lightning are -135 moneyline favorites in our sportsbook and are one of the NHL’s best bets tonight because they are at almost full strength with the return of franchise goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy, who missed the first 20 games of the season following back surgery.

Vasilevskiy has played in two of Tampa Bay’s last three games and has a win and a loss on his ledger, as well as 2.53 goals against average and .891 save percentage.

The return of the future Hall-of-Famer should help strengthen Tampa Bay’s defensive play, which has been unnaturally shaky before this season. The Lightning have surrendered 81 goals, which is third-most in the NHL.

Which isn’t particularly great. Especially when factoring in that Tampa Bay’s 80 goals scored is second-most in the league.

But still it’s better than what’s taking place in Western Pennsylvania. Despite the off-season addition of offensive defenseman Erik Karlsson, the Penguins are in the middle-of-the-pack with 65 goals scored, an average of 3.10 per game.

And it should be noted that 10 of Pittsburgh’s 65 goals were scored in one game, the Penguins’ 10-2 laugher over the league-worst San Jose Sharks on Nov. 4. In their 11 subsequent games, the Penguins are 5-6 and are averaging 2.63 goals.

To summarize: Pittsburgh is treading water because it is not scoring goals. Which must be vexing since the Penguins are yielding only 2.18 goals per game in the stretch.

NHL Bet for Nov. 30: Tampa Bay Lightning -135.
