Atlantic Division Rivals Meet Again

Boston Closing on NHL Wins, Points Records

The Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs are set to meet for the final time during the regular season. However, it may not be the final matchup between the teams, considering that the Bruins are the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs with Toronto locked into facing Tampa Bay in the first round. If Boston and Toronto win in the opening round, they will meet once again in the postseason.

Toronto has better results at home. However, a 20-13-4 road record is nothing to apologize for. The Bruins have the best home record at 31-4-3.

Even with the Bruins resting players with such a comfortable lead in the race, Boston is fourth in the NHL with a .750 points percentage since the start of March. Toronto is 8-6-2 over that same stretch, so keep that in mind when making NHL picks.

When looking at some of the NHL news, Toronto forward Mitchell Marner, defensemen Mark Giordano and Jake McCabe, and goalie Matt Murray are questionable. For the Bruins, defenseman Charlie McAvoy and forwards Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci were all practicing on Wednesday. Forward Taylor Hall is back at practice without wearing a non-contact jersey.

According to the NHL playoff odds, the Bruins (+350) continue to have the best odds to win the Stanley Cup title. Toronto (+950) is tied with Carolina for third in the championship odds.

Scoring Depth Key for Toronto

When the season started, Zach Aston-Reese and Joseph Woll would not be the first names to come to mind when Toronto posted a key early April win.

However, Aston-Reese recorded his second multi-goal game of the season while Woll made 24 saves, as Toronto topped Columbus on Tuesday to move six points ahead of three-time defending Eastern Conference champion Tampa Bay.

Alex Kerfoot also scored, while Sam Lafferty had a pair of assists.

Toronto has plenty of talented offensive players. Auston Matthews is two goals shy of his fifth 40-goal season, while Mitchell Marner is closing in on his first 100-point season.

Reliance on the top offensive players has led to early playoff exits, so if Toronto can get production throughout its lineup, this could be a dangerous team come playoff time.

The Las Vegas odds total has gone under in four of Toronto’s last five games.

Newcomers Stepping Up

It is easy to think of David Pastrnak, Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand and David Krejci when mentioning the Boston Bruins.

Bergeron and Krejci have played more than 1,000 career games, all with the Bruins. Counting the playoffs, Marchand is also over 1,000 games, while Pastrnak has a chance to join Phil Esposito as the only Bruin to score at least 60 goals in a season.

Not all the contributors to Boston’s remarkable season have been with the team for years.

Pavel Zacha, acquired in the offseason, is second on the team with 12 points (three goals, nine assists) since the start of March. Tyler Bertuzzi (three goals, six assists), defenseman Dmitry Orlov (one goal, eight assists) and Garnet Hathaway are players who were acquired during the season and have been helping the Bruins win, as Boston is threatening the NHL single-season records for wins and points.

The NHL betting lines total has gone under in each of Boston’s last seven home games.
