Surprising Panthers Eyeing Sixth Win in a Row
The Toronto Maple Leafs used a pair of road victories against the three-time defending Eastern Conference champion Tampa Bay Lightning to end nearly 20 years of playoff futility. Now Toronto heads on the road needing to win at least once to keep from being eliminated by the Florida Panthers.
Despite not allowing a power-play goal and winning nearly 60% of the faceoffs, Toronto heads to Sunrise down 0-2 in the series.
Seven different players have scored for the Panthers in the first two games as Florida followed up the first-round upset of Boston by taking control against Toronto.
The Maple Leafs squandered a two-goal lead in Game 2 to put themselves in a hole. With a 3-0 road record so far in the playoffs, more road magic will be necessary.
For those making NHL picks, keep in mind that Florida hasn’t reached the Eastern Conference finals since 1996 and Toronto hasn’t been there since 2002, so one of these teams will end years of playoff frustration.
When looking at some of the NHL news, forward Matthew Knies (concussion) is out and could miss the rest of the series. Defensemen Victor Mete and Jake Muzzin are out as well as forward Nicholas Robertson are out.
For Florida, forwards Ryan Lomberg and Patric Hornqvist are out.
Florida’s odds to win the series moved from +115 to -300 after the Game 2 win. Toronto’s series odds went from -105 to +250.
According to the NHL playoff odds, Toronto’s top odds to win the Stanley Cup title moved from +500 to +850 after the Game 2 loss. Florida saw its championship odds go from +700 to +500.
Now Or Never for Toronto’s Big Guns
The quartet of Auston Matthews, Mitchell Marner, William Nylander and John Tavares combined for 146 goals during the regular season and 13 more in the first round series against Tampa Bay.
However, heading into Game 3, they have a combined total of no goals and three assists to go with -8 defensive rating.
It wasn’t due to a lack of opportunities as they have combined for 42 shots on goal in the first two games.
If Toronto is going to make some noise in the series, they can’t continue to see their best offensive players come up empty.

Finding a Way To Win
There is not one number associated with the Florida Panthers that should have them two wins away from the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 27 years.
Florida has only scored two more goals than they have allowed, ranking ninth on the power play and 12th on the penalty kill.
However, they are on a five-game winning streak thanks to getting contributions up and down the lineup.
Led by defenseman Brandon Montour’s six goals, eight players have at least two goals and 13 players have at least one goal.
Matthew Tkachuk leads the way with 10 assists and 15 points and he has assisted on four of the seven goals in this series.
Four of the last six games played by the Panthers finished over the Las Vegas NHL odds total.

Matthews scored five times against Florida during the regular season with Marner and Tavares combining for nine assists.
Montour led the Panthers with two goals and five points.
