Panthers Eye Spot in Eastern Conference Final
Could it really end like this for the Toronto Maple Leafs?
After nearly 20 years of playoff frustration, the Maple Leafs took out three-time defending Eastern Conference champion Tampa Bay to reach the second round. With Boston being upset in the opening round, the door was open for a long postseason run for the Maple Leafs.

The Florida Panthers had other ideas and head into Wednesday’s Game 4 with a chance to eliminate the Maple Leafs and extend the misery of the long-suffering Toronto fans.
The Maple Leafs struck first in each of the last two games only to come out on the wrong side of 3-2 finals.
Toronto has outshot Florida in two of the first three games and won 60% of the faceoffs only to lose each game.
Toronto has been outscored 8-3 from the second period on in the first three games.
The Maple Leafs haven’t been swept in a series since 1981.
For those making NHL picks, keep in mind that Florida hasn’t reached the Eastern Conference finals since 1996 and Toronto hasn’t been there since 2002.
When looking at some of the NHL news, Maple Leafs goalie Ilya Samsonov is questionable after being on the receiving end of a collision that knocked him out of Game 3. Forward Matthew Knies, who had a goal and two assists in the first two games of the Tampa Bay series, is out with a concussion. Fellow forward Nicholas Robertson as well as defensemen Victor Mete and Jake Muzzin are also out for the Maple Leafs.
For Florida, wingers Patric Hornqvist and Ryan Lomberg are out.
Florida’s odds to win the series moved from -300 to -900 after the Game 3 win. Toronto’s series odds went from +250 to +650.
According to the NHL playoff odds, Florida’s odds to win the Stanley Cup title moved from +500 to +325 after taking a 3-0 lead in the series. Toronto was a championship front-runner when the series began, but its title odds have moved from +500 to +850 to +2500 since the start of this series.
Last Call for Toronto Stars
Six Toronto players have goals in the first three games of the series and none of them are named Auston Matthews, Mitchell Marner, John Tavares or William Nylander.
If the Maple Leafs plan to get back into the series, they will need more from the players who combined for 13 goals during the series with the Lightning and were the top four goal scorers for the Maple Leafs during the regular season.
They have combined for 49 shots on goal in the first three games and have no goals to show for it. They are also a combined -10 in the series.
Each of the last five games played by the Maple Leafs finished under the NHL betting lines total.
Less is Sometimes More
The Florida Panthers haven’t worried about rolling four lines or spreading out the minutes to all of their defensemen.
Eight Panthers are averaging more than 19 minutes in the first three games of the series. There has been no sign of fatigue with the Panthers scoring clutch goals in the second and third periods.
Those players have a combined plus/minus rating of +18 in the series with the rest of the skaters coming in at +3.
Defenseman Brandon Montour leads with way as he has been on the ice for an average of 25:29 in the series and is tied for the series lead with a +4 rating. Sam Reinhart scored the overtime goal in Game 3.

Maple Leafs vs Panthers Picks and Prediction
Is having two days off since Game 3 a good thing for a Toronto team on the verge of elimination? Restless would not come close to describing the mood among Maple Leafs Nation.
Florida has outscored Toronto 7-3 in the second and third periods in the first two games of the series, so that is something to keep in mind when it comes to NHL live betting odds.
Florida has had just four power plays in the first three games with Anthony Duclair scoring on the man advantage in Game 3. The Panthers have killed off six of the seven Toronto power plays in the series. They weren’t called for a penalty in Game 3.
In three home playoff games, the Panthers are 4 for 12 on the power play. Toronto has killed off eight of the 11 opposing power plays on the road.
Toronto goalie Samsonov has a save percentage of .892 in the first three games of the series. It would be a tough spot for the 24-year-old Joseph Woll if Samsonov is unable to play in Game 4. Florida’s Sergei Bobrovsky has posted a .938 save percentage and 1.97 GAA as he is playing his way into the Conn Smythe Trophy conversation after not even getting the call between the pipes when the playoffs started.
Toronto had won six straight road games dating back to the regular season before the Game 3 loss. There hasn’t been much to separate these teams when it comes to quality of play during the series so look for Toronto to extend the series.
When making NHL predictions, keep in mind that Toronto is 24-21 against the spread on the road while Florida is only 18-27 against the NHL betting lines on home ice.
Toronto is 41-31-10 when listed as the favorite by the NHL odds while Florida is 14-12-2 as the underdog.
