NHL Parlay: Ride with Road Underdogs

We are making bold picks this March 21 for our “Dog Sled” NHL parlay. Road underdogs have only won 38.2% of their matchups this season and that roughly translates to odds of +162. But we’ll roll with three road underdogs to get the job done anyway. We estimate these dogs have better than a 50% chance to win, hence why they are our NHL picks today.

Rangers Edge the Bruins – New York Rangers

The Bruins were nearly unbeatable at home last season. But with a record of 23-14 (23-8-6) this season, it’s not as tall of a task. And the Rangers are up to the task with a 13-9 (13-7-2) road record and a 7-3 (7-2-1) record as underdogs in conference games.

On top of that, the Rangers have played well against the Bruins even if star goalie Igor Shesterkin has not. They outshot Boston and got the edge on special teams in their last three meetings. The Rangers’ top-four penalty kill (84.9%) as a visitor is key given how many penalties might occur in this physical game.

Additionally, Peter Laviolette has coached his teams well against the Bruins, historically. His first tenure on a team also tends to lead to stunning results as he led three teams to the Stanley Cup Finals. This could be the Rangers this season. As such, given the NHL’s latest lines, we like the Rangers at underdog odds to get the upset here.

St. Louis Sings it in Ottawa – Ottawa

It’s tough to call Ottawa overrated given how badly this team has played. But here it is as a slight favorite at home per the NHL odds. Even if St. Louis is 6-9 when playing on the road against Eastern Conference opponents.

Ottawa is also only 7-6 (7-5-1) when hosting teams from that conference. While it did upset Vegas and Dallas it also lost to Arizona and Anaheim. In short, we can’t bet online on a team this inconsistent, especially with a defense that gives up more than 3.5 goals per game.

Even if the Blues struggle to score on the road, they should have no issues getting into it with Ottawa. The Senators are not playing for anything and St. Louis is still hunting for a wild card spot. We like for the road underdogs to be just a bit more prepared than the perennial also-ran.

Blackhawks Pluck the Ducks – Chicago

We don’t always make the Blackhawks our NHL prediction but we will in this matchup. Anaheim is just atrocious having lost seven straight games and being 6-14 when playing conference games at home. It even got blown out by the Blackhawks 7-2 in their last meeting. Chicago is 8-2 (8-1-1) in its last 10 matchups versus Anaheim.

Even with all the injuries, the Blackhawks have been beating other bad teams. Their last few wins have come against Anaheim, San Jose and Arizona (twice). Chicago may only be 1-19 in its last 20 road games, but the Ducks are the type of team they can buck this trend against.

With the online sports betting lines favoring Anaheim, this is a strong “dog or pass” type of play. We’ll take the Blackhawks and add them to this underdog parlay.
