Finding some high-scoring NHL games can be more art than science. Don’t quote us on that. But as much as we dig into statistics, advanced analytics, and betting history, we can still get it wrong often. Still, we can highlight Dec. 7’s NHL games and pick three matchups that have the makings of an explosive one. Parlay these three games to go over their totals in this week’s “Toasty Totals”.
Best NHL Totals to Parlay on Dec. 7
Toronto and Ottawa Get Nuts as Usual
Toronto and Ottawa are never short of animosity. As such, we often see more scoring than defending in these games. The average total in their last 10 meetings is a flat 6.5. Both have power-play percentages over 20% and more notably, they’re currently producing plenty of scoring chances.
Ottawa is generating the most high-danger chances per game at over 14.6 with Toronto not far behind at 13.1. Defensively, the Senators are also giving up over 12.4 while Toronto is allowing 13.5. And while each team has dependable goaltending to make up for this, it might not be the case here.

Joseph Woll got lit up six goals in his last start against Ottawa while Anton Forsberg has a career 3.33 goals against average (GAA) versus Toronto. There will be more scoring opportunities than either goaltender can make a clutch save. This “Battle of Ontario” is a solid NHL pick to go over.
NHL Pick: Maple Leafs, Senators Over 6½
Blue Jackets and Islanders Get in Unlikely Barnburner
When we think of high-scoring duels, rarely do the Blue Jackets or Islanders cross our minds. These teams are ranked 25th and 27th in scoring, respectively. They’re also 21st and 25th in shots per game. And on top of that, the Islanders have an elite goaltender in Ilya Sorokin. So why is this a part of our NHL best bets?
For one, the Islanders have been brutal defensively. They look more like last season’s Ducks in giving up scoring chances: over 37.8 per game, which is just behind San Jose. Columbus, on the other hand, has some porous goaltending. Its 88.8% save percentage is in the bottom seven of the league.
Between the Isles’ slack defending and Columbus’s goaltending woes, the two sides can find ways to score against each other. It’s worth betting online given their total is only at six goals.
NHL Pick: Blue Jackets, Islanders Over 6
Predators Prey on Prone Lightning
Tampa Bay heads to Nashville on the second night of a back-to-back. With Andrei Vasilevskiy playing on Wednesday, it will likely be Jonas Johansson in goal. This means Tampa Bay could be prone to give up plenty of goals against Nashville, a vastly improved team offensively.
The Predators are better than their stats indicate: over 3.1 goals per game (18th overall). This team puts up over 31 shots a game and 13.7 high-danger chances. It has scored three or more goals in 8 of its last 10 games. This includes dropping eight on St. Louis and four against Colorado.
The Lightning are giving up the second-most goals per game (4.2) on the road. They’ve allowed four or more goals in over half of their games. And on the flip side, they’re scoring over 3.1 goals on average. Thus, NHL lines frequently have their games lined at 6½ or seven. Still, this one is going ‘over’.
NHL Pick: Lightning, Predators Over 6½
