Bruins Stabilize

The Bruins began the season with a wild shootout victory over the Devils and followed with two losses. Boston’s failures against New Jersey and New York ran much deeper than a mini-losing streak, at this point. The Bruins only scored one goal in those two losses and were mired in a 150+ minute full-strength scoring drought.

Looking at what Boston is doing on the ice now, this stat seems ridiculous and is a distant memory. The Bruins have come a long way since their subpar 1-1-1 start, and they’re mauling most who cross their path. Ironically, a 5-4 shootout victory over Philadelphia on Jan 21 is what set Boston on its current course of rampage.

The Bruins awoke from hibernation in the third period of that game, scoring four goals in the final frame. Boston peppered Philly G Carter Hart with 43 shots during this battle, and eventually got the better of him. Since this Bruins’ victory, Boston has only lost one game, a 4-3 OTL to the Washington Capitals.

Head-to-Head

The Bruins are 3-0 against the Flyers, with Boston outscoring Philadelphia 15-8 in the process. Two contests were settled beyond regulation, but the one in between was a 6-1 Bruins blowout. Boston clamped down hard on defense, only allowing Philadelphia 17 shots on goal, while scorching Hart for six goals.

In the most recent battle between the Bruins and Flyers, Boston G Tuuka Rask outperformed Carter Hart once again. Rask stopped 22 of the 25 shots he faced and has two victories against Philadelphia this year. Hart is winless in 2021 vs Boston.

The Bruins are playing special teams at a much higher level than the Flyers right now. Boston is scoring on the power play 35.3% of the time, while Philadelphia only succeeds on 24.2% of its chances. The Bruins are killing an impressive 88.9% of their opponents PPs, and the Flyers only manage a 70.7% kill rate.

Boston is superior defensively, and clearly has Hart’s number. For the season, Hart has an inflated 3.42 GAA, and we can expect him to be exploited on Friday night. The Bruins will definitely want to put the Flyers away in regulation, and should come out guns ablazing. The Bruins’ puck line and money line are sound bets here, as well as the over for total goals.
