Oilers vs Stars Stanley Cup Semifinals Game 5: Prediction, Odds and Picks

This whole falling behind by two goals strategy seems to be paying off in the series between the Edmonton Oilers and the Dallas Stars. After Dallas erased an early two-goal deficit to win Game 3, Edmonton followed the same script to even the Western Conference finals at 2-2 heading into Game 5. The NHL odds have Dallas as the home favorite in Game 5 – the home team has been favored in each of the previous 17 meetings.

Dallas won two of the three matchups in the regular season and that includes a 5-0 victory. Edmonton is 6-7 in Dallas since 2021 so the Oilers have enjoyed some success on the road against the Stars.

The NHL betting line has Dallas priced at -130 to win Game 4 with the Oilers at +240 to cover at -1½ on the puck line. Edmonton has +110 odds to win the game outright. The odds are pretty much the same as in Game 4 with the lone exception being that Dallas is at home and favored after Edmonton won as the home favorite in Game 4.

The odds moved from -250 to -125 for the Stars to win the series after the Game 4 loss. Edmonton is priced at +105 to win the series. There are +250 odds for Dallas to win the series in seven games followed by +275 odds for either Dallas or Edmonton to close things out in six games.

When looking at the NHL championship odds, the odds for the Stars to win the Stanley Cup moved from +150 to +225 after losing the last game. Edmonton’s championship odds went from +450 to +300 following the Game 4 loss.

Oilers vs Stars Odds and Spreads

Oilers Thriving on the Penalty Kill

Not even the great Edmonton Oilers teams led by Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Paul Coffey have accomplished what this current group has done.

The Oilers established a franchise playoff record by going eight games in a row without allowing a power-play goal.

Beginning with a crucial win over the Vancouver Canucks in Game 4 of the previous series, Edmonton has killed off the last 23 opposing power plays. The only special teams goal scored in those eight games came on a short-handed tally by Edmonton’s Mattias Janmark.

Dallas was 0-for-2 on the power play in Game 4 and had only one shot on Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner with the man advantage.

Ryan McLeod, one of three players inserted into the lineup who didn’t play in the previous game, was fourth among Edmonton forwards in short-handed time on ice. He also teamed with Corey Perry, another player who returned to the ice after a stretch of games as a healthy scratch, on Edmonton’s first goal.

Four of Edmonton’s last five road games went under the total.

Expect Early Scoring

Edmonton and Dallas lead all teams in this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs in first-period scoring.

Edmonton has scored 20 times and is +7 in the first period in its first 16 playoff games. Dallas has played one additional game in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Stars have 18 goals and a +5 goal differential in the opening 20 minutes of games.

In Game 4, the teams combined for four goals in the first period and three (counting an empty-net tally by Mattias Ekholm) the rest of the way.

In this series, Edmonton has outscored Dallas 5-3 in the first period. Connor McDavid leads the way with a goal and two assists in the first period while defenseman Evan Bouchard has a goal and an assist.

Jamie Benn has a goal and two assists in the first period for Dallas, Wyatt Johnston has a goal and an assist and defenseman Miro Heiskanen has assisted on two of the three Dallas goals in the first period.

Thirteen of the last 20 games for the Stars went under the total.

Stars Look to Reverse Troubling Betting Trend

Dallas is just 4-3-2 outright in this year’s playoffs as a home favorite. The Stars have covered against the puck line in just two of those games.

Edmonton has lost three of its last four games as a road underdog. The lone win came against Dallas.

Here are some numbers for those who bet online to consider heading into Game 5 of the series between Dallas and Edmonton.

  • Seven of the last 10 times Edmonton played in Dallas, the game went under the total.
  • Dallas is 54-27-9 as a favorite this season.
  • Edmonton has lost six of its 10 games as the underdog.
  • The Oilers are 17-32 against the puck line on the road.
  • Dallas has covered in just 16 of 50 home games.
  • The Stars have seen 29 games at home land over the total.
  • Eight of the last 12 games between the Stars and the Oilers went over the total.

Oilers vs Stars Injury Update

Defensemen Jani Hakanpaa and Jared Rosburg are out for Dallas while it should be all hands on deck for Edmonton.

Both Power Plays (0-for-15) Punchless

Over his last 28 games, Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger has lost back-to-back games just once and that took place in the first two games of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Vegas Golden Knights.

After a loss in this year’s playoffs, Oettinger has a goals-against average of 1.48 and a save percentage of .942. Look for Oettinger to be in the zone in this matchup.

When looking at player prop options, keep in mind that Jamie Benn leads Dallas with six assists and seven points in the series while McDavid has two goals and five assists in the series for the Oilers.

The teams are a combined 0-for-15 on the power play in the first four games of the series.

Dallas is 17-4-2 in its last 23 games that had five or fewer combined goals scored. Edmonton is 10-6-4 in its last 20 games that went under six goals. The total is set at six goals for this matchup.
