Flyers Try to End Season in Positive Fashion

There is no one in Philadelphia that saw this season going this way. The preseason top 10 team overall has had nothing but bad luck all season. Whether it be battling injuries or the inability to close out a hockey game, the Flyers have put themselves in a spot where they will not be in the playoffs.

Offensively the Flyers had a trio of players who were able to have decent seasons. Right winger Jakub Voracek led the team in points with 43. He scored nine goals and assisted on 34 others.

Left-winger James Van Riemsdyk and right-winger Claude Giroux are both tied with 41 points. Each has scored 16 goals and assisted on 25 others.

Giroux, the captain of the team, has been giving his everything all season, noted here on the Philadelphia Flyers website “All the while, even as the Flyers saw their team’s playoff hopes fade away in April, the captain did everything within his individual power to buoy the team. The Flyers as a team have significantly underachieved this season since the beginning of March, but Giroux’s individual performance and commitment level were not the problem.”

After an injury to Carter Hart in mid-April, the Flyers have given the goaltender responsibilities to Brian Elliott. In 25 starts, Elliott has a record of 14-9-2 and is giving up 3.1 goals per game. In a year where Elliott was supposed to be the backup, he has stepped up.

Capitals Close Out Crazy 2021

The Capitals, who are just two points out of first place in the division, will look to get back on track. With the East being such a tight race all year, there is no real bottom team going into the playoffs.

The Capitals have been led all year by the play of centerman Nicklas Backstrom. In 54 games, he has accrued 53 points by scoring 15 goals and assisting on 38. The Capitals have three other players who have surpassed 40 points. Another single-player over 30 and then seven that have surpassed 20.

Vitek Vanecek has been the main goaltender for the Capitals. With a record of 20-10-3, Vanecek is only giving up 2.73 goals per game. When Vanecek has a rest day, the Capitals turn things over to Ilya Samsonov. In 17 starts, he has a record of 13-4 and is giving up 2.69 goals per game.

Free Pick

The Capitals will not take two games off in a row. They will not want to go into the first round of the playoffs, having lost two games to one of the division’s worst teams. While it seems the Flyers are playing inspired hockey, the Capitals need to come out and handle business. Bet on the Capitals to continue building momentum towards the playoffs and to take care of the Flyers handily.

Pick: Washington Capitals Moneyline (-180)
