The Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals met on Sunday with the Flyers getting the win 7-4. That now makes it five wins in their last seven while the Capitals are on a three-game losing streak. Will Washington be able to snap out of it Tuesday and pick up a win or will the Flyers beat the Caps again? Let’s take a closer look at the online betting odds.
Philadelphia Flyers vs Washington Capitals
Date: Tuesday, 6 p.m. ET
Location: Capital One Arena, Washington, DC
Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers have been an odd story as they sit at 8-3-2 despite losing in almost every statistical category in those games (except for goals scored). A key example of this is that they have been outshot in 11 out of their past 13 contests but continue to win. This team has gotten a huge boost out of their starting left winger James van Riemsdyk as he currently leads in goals, points and assists. His seven goals help lead the way for a Philadelphia roster that is the eighth highest-scoring team in the league.
However, they were outshot in their last game 37-23, which cannot happen consistently if they want to win. Eventually, this will catch up. Brian Elliott is expected to get the start, a change from Carter Hart, who started their last game. Elliott is currently 3-1 and has a .929 save percentage. His last game was a bit of a disappointment, though, as he allowed two goals in less than 30 seconds, which eventually led to a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Boston Bruins.
Washington Capitals
Similar to the Flyers, the Capitals have benefited from their elite offensive play. However, they have been terrible on the defensive end. They’re allowing the fifth-most shots. They need to step up on the defensive end to avoid giving the Flyers free scoring opportunities and a big way to combat that is to limit their penalty minutes. They’ve compiled the seventh-most penalty minutes.
Goalie Vitek Vanecek has started in nine straight games due to Ilya Samsonov being placed on the COVID-19 list on Jan. 20. Samsonov was hush about whether he will be able to make it onto the ice for this matchup. If he is not able to, it would leave Vanecek as the starter once more despite being pulled in their last matchup after allowing four goals on only 13 shots on net. Luckily, their offense is so talented behind Alex Ovechkin, Niklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson have all been terrific. Ovechkin has actually scored 12 points in his past eight games and is seventh in the league in points per game.
Prediction: Flyers 5, Capitals 4
