Rangers Smart Bet to Rebound Against Penguins

The New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins have been part of a bitter rivalry for the better part of 50 years, meeting in the Stanley Cup Playoffs eight times, with Pittsburgh winning five.

Another chapter will be written tonight when the Metropolitan Division rivals meet at PPG Paints Arena, which will make for compelling viewing and fascinating NHL odds.

Rangers vs Penguins Best Bets

Oddsmakers believe the Rangers are closer to being a Stanley Cup contender than the Penguins. According to our NHL future odds, New York is +1000, while Pittsburgh is +3000.

And there are reasons why.

Despite dropping a 6-3 decision to the Dallas Stars Monday night, the Rangers are 8-1-1 in their last 10 and have won 12-of-16 games to start the season. Whereas New York has begun the 2023-24 season with positive traction, the Penguins have had a start-and-stop open to the campaign.

Pittsburgh is 9-8-0 through 17 games and has won 6-of-10. However, the Penguins have not yet developed home-ice advantage, going 4-5-0 at PPG Paints Arena, compared to 5-3-0 on the road before this season.

The biggest difference between the teams is in goal. New York’s tandem of Igor Shesterkin (7-3-0; .908, 2.60) and Jonathan Quick (4-0-1; .928, 1.98) have backstopped the Rangers to the second-fewest goals allowed in the league (39) and third-fewest goals against per game average (2.44).

By comparison, Pittsburgh is tied for fifth-fewest goals allowed (46) and seventh in goals allowed per game (2.71). This is positive, as are No. 1 goaltender Tristan Jarry’s overriding numbers (6-7-0; .910, 2.59), but he has had five games this season in which he finished with a sub-.900 save percentage.

NHL Pick: New York Rangers -115
