Rangers Solid Bounce-Back Pick in Game 2 vs Panthers

Florida Bidding for 2-0 Series Lead

It was not quite the start that the Madison Square Garden faithful had in mind as the New York Rangers began the Eastern Conference finals by being shut out at home for the first time all season. The NHL odds have Friday’s second game as basically a pick’em.

This is the first series between the teams since 1997 when the Rangers won in five games. Florida won two of the three meetings during the regular season and two of the three games were decided by one goal.

The series opener was the first matchup between the Panthers and the Rangers to finish under the total since 2016, a stretch of 19 games.

The Las Vegas odds have both teams at -110 to win Game 2, although the Panthers opened at -115. There are +240 odds for the Panthers to cover at -1½ on the puck line – odds that are almost identical to Game 1.

The Panthers are priced at +375 to win the series in six games and make it back-to-back trips to the Stanley Cup Finals. There are +450 odds for either Florida or New York to win the series in seven games.

According to the NHL playoff odds, the Panthers (+225) are tied with the Dallas Stars for the shortest odds to win the Stanley Cup. The Rangers are at +360 in the championship odds.

Panthers vs Rangers Odds and Spreads

Usual Suspects Shine for Panthers

Carter Verhaeghe, Matthew Tkachuk, and Sam Bennett rank second, third, and fourth in Florida Panthers’ franchise history in playoff scoring. Right on cue, they each had a goal in the series opener as Florida won 3-0.

Bennett and Verhaeghe each finished with five shots on goal. Verhaeghe and Tkachuk added an assist each and, between them, they finished with a plus/minus rating of +5.

Verhaeghe has three goals and four assists in four games against the Rangers this season while Tkachuk has two goals and four assists. Keep an eye on them as player prop options.

Six of Florida’s last 10 games went over the total.

Weak Series Opener Rangers

The Rangers didn’t make Florida goalie Sergei Bobrovsky work very hard in Game 1 as the veteran netminder had 23 saves, with three of them coming on a pair of power plays.

The numbers were not good for some of the top guns for the Rangers.

Artemi Panarin and Alexis Lafreniere were each -3 in the game. Chris Kreider, Vincent Trocheck, Adam Fox and Erik Gustafsson were each -2 while Mika Zibanejad had a team-high three giveaways.

There have been calls for the Rangers to re-insert rookie forward Matt Rempe into the lineup. Rempe averaged 6:18 of ice time in the seven playoff games he has played in so that doesn’t seem like the golden ticket.

Fifteen of New York’s 35 goals in the playoffs have come on the power play or while short-handed. Four of those power-play goals have come from Vincent Trocheck while Chris Kreider leads the Rangers with seven goals in the playoffs. More will be needed from the special teams in this game.

Five of the last eight games for the Rangers went over the total.

The Rangers have been home underdogs just four times this season, with two of those matchups coming against the Panthers. They won two of those four games.

Florida has won 20 of its last 23 games as a road favorite and has covered against the puck line in 15 of those games.

Here are some numbers to consider for those who bet online:

  • Nine of the last 11 times the Rangers played at home against Florida, the game went over the total.
  • Florida is 54-23-2 as a favorite this season.
  • The Rangers are 13-8-2 as the underdog.
  • Just 17 of Florida’s 47 road games went over the Las Vegas odds total.
  • The Rangers are 21-26 against the puck line at home.

Expect Things to Get Physical

The Rangers have a bit of a dilemma.

Florida leads the four teams still alive in the race for Lord Stanley’s Cup with an average of 46.1 hits per 60 minutes compared to 30 hits for the Rangers.

The Rangers would like to turn up the intensity but if things get nasty, that would play into Florida’s hands.

The Rangers are 4-2 at home in the playoffs and the Panthers are 5-1 on the road. Florida is now 6-1 in this year’s playoffs when scoring first.

It wasn’t all bad news for the Rangers in Game 1 as forward Filip Chytil returned to the ice. His last regular-season game was on Nov. 2 and he played just 10:23 in his lone playoff game for Wednesday’s series opener.
