The New York Rangers advanced to this second-round series after taking out the Pittsburgh Penguins to seven games.
They fell behind, 3-1, in that series but rattled off three straight wins to advance, including the last game in overtime. The Carolina Hurricanes were also forced into a Game 7 against the Bruins before eliminating Boston.
Which of these teams will be able to come away with the first game of the series? Take a closer look at this NHL game betting preview and see what’s the best move versus the NHL odds.
If the Rangers are going to make noise in this series, goaltending needs to lead the way. Igor Shesterkin was arguably the best goalie in the league throughout the regular season, posting a 36-13-4 record with a .935 save percentage and a 2.07 goals-against average.
Against Pittsburgh, however, Shesterkin wasn’t consistent. He ended with 79 saves in a triple overtime loss (Game 1), then stopped 39 shots in a Game 2 win. He struggled in Games 4 and 5, but bounced back in Games 6 and 7. The Rangers continue to heavily rely on him.
Hurricanes Have Had Success Against Rangers
Carolina was incredibly good against the New York Rangers and Igor Shesterkin during the season.
The Hurricanes were 2-0-0 with Shesterkin in the opposing net, with seven goals on 60 shots.
The problem for Carolina is that it’s suffering from some goalie issues themselves, as their starter, Frederik Anderson, did missed the entire Boston series with a lower body injury.
Anderson’s not expected to be ready for Game 1, and perhaps longer, so Antti Raanta figures to continue filling the bill.. Raanta was 3-2 against the Bruins (.927 save percentage).
Those were strong numbers, but Carolina would probably have more confidence in Anderson. Take a close look at the injury news before placing you betonline.
Rangers vs Hurricanes Head-to-Head
The Hurricanes won three out of the four regular season meetings against the Rangers this season. We’ll see if that momentum carries over into the postseason.
Going by the recent games against one another, it’s likely the Hurricanes have the Rangers’ number. That’s part of why Carolina is favored in the sportsbook.
However, New York is on a three-game winning streak, with more confidence than ever. Game 1 should be very close, with a lot of goals, Each team is attempting to figure the other out and make adjustments accordingly.
