Rangers vs Panthers Stanley Cup Semifinals Game 5: Prediction, Odds and Picks

Eastern Conference Finals Head to New York Tied at 2-2

The Eastern Conference Final is now a best-of-three series after a third consecutive overtime game between the New York Rangers and the Florida Panthers as the series moves back to the World’s Most Famous Arena. Even with a loss in Game 4, the Rangers are two wins away from becoming the first Presidents’ Trophy winner to reach the Stanley Cup Final in 11 years. However, the NHL odds favor the visiting Panthers in Game 5.

The teams hadn’t met in the playoffs since 1997. With the way this series is playing out, hopefully, more matchups will be in the very near future. Florida won its lone home game in the regular season against the Rangers this season back in December behind a pair of Sam Reinhart goals. Six of the last seven times that the Panthers and Rangers squared off, the game was decided by one goal. Three of the last four games in this series finished under the total.

The Las Vegas odds have Florida priced at -120 to win Game 5. There are +225 odds for the Panthers to cover at -1½ on the puck line. The Rangers have even odds to regain the lead in the series.

The Panthers are priced at -145 to win the series with the Rangers at +125 in the series odds. There are +200 odds for the Panthers to win the series in six games and +275 odds for the Panthers clinching the series in a winner-take-all Game 7. The Rangers are currently at +300 to win the series in seven games and +375 to win the next two games and close out the favored Panthers in six games.

According to the NHL playoff odds, the Panthers went from +350 to +240 in the odds to win the Stanley Cup after the Game 4 win. The championship odds for the Rangers moved from +235 to +350.

Panthers vs Rangers Odds and Spreads

Not Much Separating Rangers and Panthers

Now this feels like old-time playoff hockey.

In the last three games between the Panthers and the Rangers, the game has been either tied or one of the teams has been up by a goal for all of 6:50. Could the teams be headed to a fourth consecutive overtime game?

Sam Reinhart did what no other player has accomplished in this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs – score in overtime against the Rangers. New York was 4-0 in overtime after winning the last four times in the regular season when the game was tied after three periods.

Six of Florida’s last seven games went under the Las Vegas odds total.

Let’s Get Physical

Things picked up physically in Game 4 as the teams went from combining for 65 hits in Game 3 to 90 in Game 4.

The teams need to be careful because three of the five goals in Game 4 came on the power play. The final penalty called was against veteran Blake Wheeler for hooking early in overtime that set up Florida’s game-winning score.

The Panthers outshot New York 77-46 in the last two games so the Rangers need to hope that playing at home and having the last change will result in more offensive zone time. The five forwards for Rangers who were on the ice for less than 15 minutes in Game 4 had three more hits than the seven forwards playing at least 15 minutes.

The total went under in four of the last six games for the Rangers.

This is just the third time this season that the Rangers are the underdogs at home with New York splitting the first two matchups. The loss came to Florida on March 4.

Florida is 4-0 in this year’s playoffs when listed as the road favorite.

Here are some numbers to consider for those who bet online:

  • Six of Florida’s last seven games went under the total.
  • The total went under in four of the last six games for the Rangers.
  • This is just the third time this season that the Rangers are the underdogs at home with New York splitting the first two matchups. The loss came to Florida on March 4.
  • Florida is 4-0 in this year’s playoffs when listed as the road favorite.

Can Top Stars Deliver for Rangers?

It has been awhile since there has been a bigger game at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers do not want to head back to Florida needing to win in order to stay alive in the series.

Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad have yet to score a goal in this series and they will look to change that in a pivotal Game 5.

Both penalty-killing units had issues in Game 4 so keep that in mind if tempers start to boil over in this game.

Panthers 3, Rangers 2

Questions of the Day

Which team has a better record against the puck line this season going into Game 5 of the series between the Florida Panthers and New York Rangers?

The Rangers are 51-45 against the puck line while Florida is 46-51 ATS.

What are good player prop options for Game 5 of the Rangers-Panthers series?

Chris Kreider hasn’t scored since his hat trick against Carolina in Game 6 of the second-round series. Take a look at the +200 odds for the veteran Rangers winger to score in Game 5. Carter Verhaeghe has three goals and three assists in this series for the Panthers so the +206 odds for Verhaeghe to have at least two points on Thursday are pretty tempting.
