Tuesday NHL Parlay: Ride Road Underdogs

Some NHL teams are better on the road than at home, especially when we look at how prolific they have been. On Tuesday, we picked three road underdogs who could be solid bangs for your buck. These teams are either decent on the road or are facing undependable home teams. And a few of them are worth backing on their NHL future odds as surprisingly good teams this season.

Ducks Pluck Capitals: Ducks +1½ (-155)

Betting the Anaheim Ducks can be a foolhardy task. But matchups are everything in the NHL. Anaheim suffers from a lack of offense, but it takes on Washington, which is also an anemic team as far as scoring. The Ducks average more road goals (over 2.7) than the Caps do at home (2.4). Anaheim has a 19% power play versus Washington’s 11.7%.

If we also look at recent forms, Washington is just 2-4 (2-3-1) in its last six home games while Anaheim is 4-2 in its last five road games. Sure, the Ducks are on the second game of a back-to-back. But their 5-4 overtime win at Florida was early on Monday at 1:00 p.m. ET so it’s a bit more rest than the typical B2B.

Anaheim is also much younger than Washington so it should not be as weary as an older team. Given the NHL odds, Anaheim is a solid pick on the puck line.

Islanders Make the Jets Sweat: Islanders +1½ (-155)

If you look at the NHL lines and stats, the Islanders should be underdogs against the Jets. The Isles are 0-5 (0-4-1) when playing on the second game of a back-to-back. But this is all about matchups and the Isles have won seven straight against Winnipeg.

On top of that, the Islanders could put Ken Appleby in net. He’s a relative unknown with three NHL appearances and one start. But so far, so good with a 94.5% save percentage on 55 shots faced. He may just outplay Connor Hellebuyck with little to no data on him.

The Jets have also had issues putting away teams they’re supposed to beat comfortably. Winnipeg is 1-6 on the puck line (against the spread) when favored by -200 or shorter. The Islanders are a lot better than the Blackhawks or Sharks, who beat the Jets. So bet the Isles to cover +1½ for predictions for Jan. 16 NHL games.

Maple Leafs Remain Kryptonite to Oilers: Maple Leafs (+130)

Toronto is a losing team in terms of profitability, but this team is better on the road (11-9) than at home (10-11) largely due to goaltending. The Leafs are giving up just 2.9 goals as a visitor versus 3.5 at home. And the Leafs’ offense remains productive with an average of 3.4 goals.

Even if the team starts Ilya Samsonova and he gives up three to four goals, Toronto has a shot. Edmonton’s goaltending situation is not the best, either. It has a sub-90% save percentage at home. That won’t cut it when Toronto is putting up 32-33 shots on goal. Stuart Skinner, in particular, has given up eight goals on 65 shots in two games against Toronto.

Toronto has five skaters on pace for 20+ goals this season, including Auston Matthews and William Nylander. The latter has been on a tear on the road with 12 goals in 20 games and a whopping 14.3% shooting percentage. The Leafs are the right team to bet online as underdogs.
