The 45th anniversary of the most famous international hockey game in history is just over a week away. There doesn’t figure to be similar drama as the Olympic clash that saw a United States team loaded with college hockey stars take down the seemingly unbeatable Russian powerhouse at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y.
However, some of the political tensions that added to the matchup between the U.S. and Russia with calls for Russia to pull out of the war with Afghanistan are beginning to resurface. President Trump levied tariffs on products coming into the United States against various countries, including Canada. While pressure from Canadian officials resulted in President Trump backing down a bit and pausing the tariffs in Canada, some fans at the Canadian-based NHL home games booed the American national anthem that is played before NHL games.
It will be interesting to see what happens when the U.S. and Canada meet on Saturday in round-robin play at the 4 Nations Face-Off in Montreal.
