Chicago Blackhawks Stats, Odds, Standings and Schedule for 2023-24 NHL Season

Chicago Blackhawks Last Season Performance

The Chicago Blackhawks finished with just 59 points, nine less than 2021-22, and one more than Anaheim for the lowest in the league.

Chicago missed the playoffs for the third straight season and fifth time in six years. It would have been six in a row if not for the expanded playoffs in 2020 when the Blackhawks beat Edmonton in the qualifying round before losing to Vegas.

The rebuild continued as the top two scorers (Patrick Kane and Max Domi) were dealt at the deadline, and two more of the top 11 (Jake McCabe and Sam Lafferty) were also moved.

Chicago was the lowest-scoring team in the league (2.46) and just two players reached 20 goals – Taylor Raddysh and Andreas Athanasiou.

Offseason Changes

Key Additions

No doubt, the biggest addition is first-overall draft pick Connor Bedard.

The Blackhawks won the draft lottery to select the offensive dynamo, who put up 143 points in 57 games for the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League.

After grabbing Bedard, general manager Kyle Davdison tried to surround him with more talent. Former Hart Trophy winner Taylor Hall was acquired from Boston to perhaps play on Bedard’s line, while veterans Nick Foligno and Corey Perry were signed to give the young players guidance.

Forward Ryan Donato was also added for depth and you could see 2022 first-round pick Kevin Korchinski in the lineup on defense as a rookie.

Key Subtractions

Kane, Domi, and McCabe were let go at the trade deadline. Long-time captain Jonathan Toews was not re-signed after several injury and illness-plagued seasons.

The Blackhawks also said goodbye to forward Jujhar Khaira, defenseman Caleb Jones, and goalie Alex Stalock. Wing Josh Bailey was acquired from the New York Islanders and then bought out. Defensemen Ian Mitchell and Alec Regala were traded in the Hall deal.

Chicago Blackhawks Head Coach Analysis

Not much was expected of the Blackhawks in Luke Richardson’s first season at the helm, and there were ups and downs.

The record was not good overall (26-49-7), but they were competitive against the best teams at times. In the season’s final month, Chicago beat Presidents’ Trophy winner Boston while knocking off Calgary, Pittsburgh, and Nashville to help foil their playoff hopes.

Richardson will get time. He is +8000 to win the Jack Adams Award in Las Vegas odds.

Chicago Blackhawks Predictions for 2023-24 Season

The Blackhawks will definitely be a fun team to watch this season.

Bedard draws a lot of eyes, and the hope is that Davidson has put enough players around him to make the transition smooth while some promising young players improve.

Athanasiou was re-signed for two years, and Hall has a pair of seasons left on his deal, while Philipp Kurashev was brought back for two years upfront. Raddysh has established himself as a solid goal scorer, and Perry can still put the puck in the net. Chicago won’t be last in scoring.

The wild card up front is forward Lukas Reichel, who had 15 points in 23 games with the Hawks last season and is expected to be around all season.

Seth Jones (37 points last season) leads an evolving defense, with several high draft picks close to making impacts. The goaltending is in transition, with often-injured veteran Petr Mrazek holding the spot while Chicago looks at their younger goalies.

If Chicago is in the playoff hunt, there is plenty of cap space and draft picks to work with. It might not be a bad bet to put a few bucks on the Hawks to make the playoffs at +700. But our NHL prediction is they are at least a year away.

Chicago Blackhawks FAQs

How many Stanley Cups have the Chicago Blackhawks won?

The Blackhawks have won six Cups, including three between 2010-15. Chicago won the Cup in 1934 and 1938, then waited until 1961 to add a third. The Hawks also captured Lord Stanley’s beautiful trophy in 2010, 2013 and 2015, with Kane and Toews leading the way.

Can Hall revive his career in Chicago?

Hall has not come close to matching his Hart Trophy-winning season in 2017-18 when he amassed 93 points for the New Jersey Devils.

His reduced numbers were due to injuries, in part, but he only had 61 points in 81 games with Boston in 2021-22. Expect him to see a big revival with Bedard this season.

Were the Blackhawks an Original Six Team?

Yes. The franchise was founded in 1926 and the Blackhawks were one of the six teams in the NHL during that era (1942-67). Along with its Cup win in 1961, Chicago lost in the finals in 1962 and 1965.
