St. Louis Blues Last Season Performance
The 2022-23 season ended on a sour note for St. Louis as it missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2017-18 season. The Blues ended the season with a 37-38-7 regular-season record, 12 wins less than the season prior.
After losing a shootout to Boston in early April, St. Louis was eliminated from playoff contention, resulting in its second time missing the postseason since the 2010-11 season.
St. Louis Blues Key Additions
Despite missing the playoffs for the first time in years, the Blues didn’t make a bunch of noise in free agency. One of St. Louis’ biggest moves was trading for center Kevin Hayes, who should bring solid offense and veteran leadership to the Blues. Hayes finished last season with 18 goals and 54 points.
St. Louis also reunited with a former player in center Oskar Sundqvist, who was a part of its Stanley Cup-winning roster. Sundqvist signed a one-year deal after recording 28 points last season and should fill in on the bottom six for the Blues.
St. Louis Blues Key Subtractions
The Blues also saw a few players leave either in free agency or retirement in the offseason.
Backup goaltender Thomas Greiss retired after 14 seasons in the NHL, finishing his final season in St. Louis. He ended his last season with a 7-10-0 record and .896 save percentage in 16 starts.
Centers Logan Brown and Tyler Pitlick also moved on to new teams. Pitlick played in 61 games for St. Louis last season, scoring seven goals and 16 points, while Brown had six points in 30 games.
St. Louis Blues Head Coaching Analysis
Craig Berube has been the Blues’ head coach for five seasons now. He took over as interim head coach in the 2018-19 season after previous head coach MikeYeo was fired and led St. Louis to a Stanley Cup win. Berube became the third interim head coach in NHL history to lead his team to a Stanley Cup title.
Berube then led the Blues to the playoffs the next three seasons until they missed the postseason last season. He has a 193-118-43 overall record with St. Louis in five seasons so far.
St. Louis Blues Prediction for the 2023-24 Season
Despite a disappointing 2022-23 season, the Blues didn’t do much in the offseason to bolster their roster and get back to the playoffs.
St. Louis has a solid core of forwards in Robert Thomas, Jordan Kyrou and Pavel Buchnevich that should keep it from competing for a lottery pick. However, the Blues’ defense and penalty kill struggled enough last season and didn’t do much to get any better for this season.
The Blues may win some games to finish in the middle of the West yet again, but another missed postseason should be expected, which is what NHL odds predict as well.
