BREEDERS’ CUP
November 3rd-4th, 2023
Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, California.
November 3rd-4th, 2023
Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, California.
The Breeders Cup is the final race of the Grade I Thoroughbred horse racing season and has been holding competitions annually since 1984. Unlike many of the other major races and Triple Crown races, it’s held at different courses each year. The courses chosen are decided on a bidding system and the 2022 Breeders’ Cup will be held at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky.
While the Breeders’ Cup is not technically a Triple Crown race, it is now the fourth leg of the Grand Slam of thoroughbred racing. A horse that wins the Triple Crown and also wins the Breeders’ Cup will receive the honor. American Pharoah was the first and only horse to win a Grand Slam of Thoroughbred racing in 2015.
Race attendance rivals all the Triple Crown races, bringing in comparable numbers to the Kentucky Derby or Preakness Stakes. With those numbers, there’s no question that the Breeders’ Cup is one of the top horse betting events of the season – albeit the last chance to get wagers in on some of the best horse racing until the following season.
The Breeders’ Cup will be held on November 4th and 5th, 2022, and if you aren’t at Keeneland to place your wager, you can certainly bet on the Breeders’ Cup online. We will have Breeders’ Cup betting odds, specials and props available.
The Breeders’ Cup odds will be listed as soon as the qualifying horses are announced. They will have odds next to their name, usually displayed in a fractional odds format. Many prefer American odds, but fractional odds aren’t that complicated to understand. Click our How to bet on the Breeders’ Cup tab to find out more on fractional odds.
Once the lines are set, they will move, and the odds will bounce around based on a horse’s likelihood of winning the Breeders’ Cup. Fluctuation is normal, but whatever odds you locked in when you placed your wager will be held true until the race is over. It’s not a stock in the stock market, you locked your odds in when you hit the ‘Bet Now’ button.
If you want to bet on a horse with 8/1 odds, you will essentially win $8 for every $1 you wager. You can bet $2 and win $16, $50 and win $400, etc.
The main thing horse bettors need to understand is that the Breeders’ Cup is different from the Kentucky Derby or other Triple Crown races. Many don’t see the event in the same light as Triple Crown races, but tens of millions are placed on Breeders’ Cup races each year, and the handle continues to grow.
The difference with the Breeders’ Cup that horse bettors need to keep in mind is that the horses are from around the world, they aren’t just American thoroughbreds in the race. You can also bet on races ranging from six furlongs to 1.5 miles and the horses can be all different ages.
The best part of the Breeders’ Cup occurring at the end of the horse racing season is that you can look at a horses season in its entirety, and determine if you think that horse has another winning race under its belt, or if you think it’s tired, etc.
The biggest challenge you’ll find with betting on the Breeders’ Cup is that the location changes every year – it’s not a predictable course like Churchill Downs that you know well from watching the Kentucky Derby each year, it occurs throughout the United States, at different parks.
The best part about the Breeders’ Cup is that there are horses from all different ages and countries. You can bet on such a wide variety of horses – it isn’t so strict and buttoned up like the Kentucky Derby or any other Triple Crown race.
On Day One, usually, the Juvenile horses will race, featuring events for both fillies and colts. You can find turf sprint events, fillies turf events, as well as juvenile events for both fillies and colts.
Day Two of the event usually packs more variety as well as features the three-year-old horses, with filly and mare sprints and turf sprints, colt sprints and turf sprints, dirt mile races, a distaff race, and last but not least, the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
$31 Million in Purses and Awards
In 2022, the Breeders’ Cup will return to the cradle of the breeding industry and the heart of the Bluegrass state. Where the very idea of the Breeders’ Cup was conceived. To the classic elegance and the iconic feel of Keeneland.

In Thoroughbred racing, a Juvenile race is one restricted to two-year-old horses. The Juvenile Fillies is restricted to two-year-old females. It is run at 1 1/16 miles, a little more than the circumference of the racetrack. In nearly all cases over the years, the winner of the Juvenile Fillies has been named the Champion of all two-year-old females.
Horse betting is a great way to have a little fun while watching a horse race, and the Breeders’ Cup usually is the closing event of the horse racing season, meaning it’s your last chance to get in on the action.
There are so many horse betting types and options available, and horse betting is so different from sports betting, so we like to run through some horse betting education before you get started.
As soon as the Breeders’ Cup competing horses are announced and the pole positions are decided, you will want to make sure you get your wagers in. Sometimes horses perform better at certain positions, so you will want to wait until then to place your Breeders’ Cup bets.
Horse betting odds can look a bit different so we want to make sure you understand what you’re betting on, and that you have all the information you need before you start betting.
If you aren’t familiar with fractional odds, we suggest you get acquainted, as most horse bets are listed in fractional formatting. Fractional odds can be pretty simple to understand for new bettors, so don’t be afraid to stray away from American odds.
Fractional betting at the Breeders’ Cup will have odds displayed in a fraction. The right side or bottom part of the fraction represents the odds or the risk, and the left side represents your winnings. Let’s use 10-1 odds for our example. For every $1 we wager, we win $10 plus our initial $1 will be returned to us. If you bet $50, you would receive a payout of $550.
Breeders’ Cup Betting TypesLet’s look at some brief examples of Breeders’ Cup odds and betting options you might find on the sportsbook during the event.
This will be the most simple and easy-to-understand betting type you will place on any given horse race. It would be the equivalent of a moneyline wager in sports betting, as you are betting on an outcome straight up.
Now that we laid out the simplest betting options, you can look at exotics. They can be a little more complicated, and we recommend doing some research before you dive in. You can win pretty big in some cases if you’re savvy and pick the correct horses, so we recommend taking a chance on an exotic at the Breeders’ Cup.
An exacta allows you to try to predict the top two horses and where they will place in the race. Not to be confused with a Place wager, you will need to pick the first place horse, and the second place horse. If you pick Horse 5 to place first and Horse 3 to place second, the horses will need to place in those exact spots for you to win your wager.
Quinella bets are similar to the exacta, but styled more like a show bet. You will pick the top two horses but it doesn’t matter which position they end up placing, as long as they’re in the top two. If you use the same horses as above, if Horse 3 places first and Horse 5 places second, your quinella bet would win.
If you want to try your hand at betting on three horses at once, you should look into placing a Trifecta bet at the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Odds. Like an Exacta bet, you will have to predict the top three horses in order. There is no room for error on this bet, so you have to be absolutely sure!
Superfectas are the next step up from the Trifecta. You will have to predict the top four horses in order. These will be even riskier than the Trifecta, so your payout will be substantially larger.
Daily Doubles are popular at the Breeders’ Cup Odds as there are two days of races to bet on. To place a Daily Double wager, you will have to predict the winner of two races in a row. This would be similar to a parlay in regular sports betting, as you will be tying the Betting Odds of these two bets together, and both must win for your bet slip to payout.
Let’s say you want to bet on Horse 1 to win race one and horse 7 to win the following race at the Breeders’ Cup. This would be called a 1-7 Daily Double.
If you want to bet on more than two races, you can do Pick 3’s, which is what it sounds like – three picks on three races. There are also Pick 4s, Pick 6s and so on. The risk and reward grows with each race you add on. Keep in mind, you will need to be correct on every single wager, or else your entire bet slip will be scrapped.
Futures wagers can be placed weeks or months in advance – whenever the horses are qualified and listed for the races. As the last race of the season, you have a good idea which horses are performing well at major events, and can determine which horse might be in good shape come November.
The Futures odds will be listed and show you which horses are favored to win the Breeders’ Cup, and will change many times before the race and even during the race qualifiers, depending on their performances.
Yes, you can legally bet on the Breeders Cup, which is a significant two-day thoroughbred horse race – meaning you have plenty of opportunities to place your wagers.

First, you will need to familiarize yourself with horse betting options, including popular betting types and rules. We recommend researching the horses and their past few races to determine how they may perform at the Breeders’ Cup. Once you have an idea of which bets you want to place, sign up at BetUS Sportsbook and start betting.
Once the pole positions are set for the Breeders’ Cup, you will see which horses are favored to win the races. Our oddsmakers will determine how likely it is that a horse might win, and set lines for each horse racing on November 5th and 6th. Once the Breeders’ Cup odds are set, you can place wagers on horses you believe will win the race. The odds will determine how much of a payout you will receive if you predict the winner.
Participating horses in the 2021 Breeders’ Cup have not been released yet.
Do plenty of research before betting on the Breeders’ Cup. It can be challenging to predict a horse race for beginners with no strategy, so ensuring you have some research completed before betting will help in the long run.
Negative odds represent a favored horse, so by betting on the negative odds you are agreeing with oddsmakers that it is highly likely that horse will win the race.
Once you have a few races you’d like to wager on, you can combine the odds for two or more wagers to create a Breeders’ Cup parlay wager. All legs of the parlay must win for you to receive any winnings.
