Up for a game of gin rummy? Need a refresher on the rules? This is one of the simplest card games around, and in this guide, we’ll show you how to play it with a friend.

Player Numbers

Most card games can be played with just 2 players but work better with more. You can play poker heads-up with the dealer or another player, but you can’t beat the thrill of playing at a large table with half a dozen others. Blackjack can also be played with 2 if you stick with single-player blackjack at a casino, but it’s more entertaining to have other players alongside you, all working to beat the dealer.

Gin rummy is the exception. Not only does it work well with just 2 players, but it’s the best way to play this game. It’s often cited as one of the best 2 person card games for this reason. You can add a third and a fourth player if others want to join your game, but it’s best to play a gin rummy game with just you and someone else.

Gin Rummy Rules for 2 Players: Quick Look

Before we look at gin rummy card game rules in detail, here’s a summary to get the ball rolling:

  • The game is played with a single 52-card deck. No jokers.
  • King is high. Ace is low.
  • Picture cards score 10 points. All others score based on their face value.
  • Each player gets 10 cards. The remaining deck is then placed in the center of the table.
  • The top card is turned over and placed face-up next to the deck.
  • Players take turns either drawing from the deck or from the pile next to it before discarding one.

The Setup

Take a deck of 52 playing cards, remove the jokers, and then shuffle the deck.

Deal 10 cards to each player in the game. Start from your left and deal one player a single card at a time. When all players have their cards, place the top card of the deck face-up on the table (known as the discard pile). Stack the rest of the deck face-down on the table.

Play the Game

The player to the left of the dealer makes the first move. They can either take the top card of the deck, which they can’t see, or pick up the card from the discard pile, which they can see. Either way, they must discard a card to the discard pile before they end their turn. The discarded card can be one of the 10 already in their hand or the one that they picked up.

The goal of the game is to make combinations with these 10 cards. There must be at least 3 cards in a combination, and they can include cards of the same value or cards in consecutive order. For instance, a winning hand that uses all 10 cards might look something like this:

  • 6H, 6C, 6S
  • 10H, 10D, 10S
  • 2C, 3D, 4S, 5C

These connections are known as “melds”.

Gin Rummy Scoring

“Gin” is the best possible hand in the game of gin rummy. It ends the round, and that player scores 20 points. To get a “Gin”, the player must form melds using 10 cards, with the 11th card then being discarded.

A round of gin rummy can also end when all of the non-meld cards in a player’s hand total less than 10. These additional cards are known as “deadwood”. If a player chooses to end the hand at this point, they can “knock”. The opponent can then lay off their cards on their opponent’s melds, and if they then have a lower count, they win the difference in points, plus a bonus of 25 points.

Typically, a complete game of gin rummy will span 100 points. The first player to reach this total wins.

Gin vs Gin Rummy

Gin is the same game as gin rummy. It is just a shortened name. Gin rummy is so named because it is a variation of rummy, a category of games based around the concept of creating “melds”.
