Don’t Be a Casino Rookie—10 Do’s and Don’ts for Every Gambler
A Vegas Local’s Guide to Not Embarrassing Yourself at the Casino

Gamble, But Make It Classy
Stepping into a casino should be exhilarating, not a crash course in how to embarrass yourself. As someone who spends a fair amount of time in Las Vegas casinos, let me do you a favor—here’s what to do (and what not to do) so you don’t become a cautionary tale in casino news headlines.
10. Don’t: Ignore Casino Staff
We’ve all been there, drunk and disorderly (okay, not all of us but a good number). But whether it’s security, dealers, or floor managers, the staff is there to keep things running smoothly. If they tell you to do (or stop doing) something, just listen. It’s usually for a reason, and arguing with them won’t get you anywhere except escorted out.

9. Do: Cash Out Gracefully
Alright, this is one that I’ve had to learn the hard way. If you’re winning big, don’t make an obnoxious spectacle just because they do it in the movies. Collect your chips, take them to the cashier, and leave with your dignity intact. No need for a victory lap around the casino screaming about your jackpot to anyone who will listen (spare yourself the shame).
8. Don’t: Hog the Machines
If you’re taking a break, cash out or let someone else have a turn. Sitting at a slot machine for 45 minutes without playing while scrolling through your phone is annoying for everyone waiting. Also, if you’re playing, don’t take up two machines at once, it’s a casino, not your living room. But also, don’t be a dick and ask someone if they’re done on a machine when they stopped for literally two minutes to drink their drink. Move along.
7. Do: Dress the Part
Most casinos are casual, but if you’re planning on hitting a high-end spot or a nightclub afterward, dress accordingly. Flip-flops and board shorts might fly at the rooftop pool, but at some casinos, you’ll get turned away. Plus, dressing up just makes you feel more like a winner. Manifestation, y’all!

6. Don’t: Chase Your Losses
We’ve all been there, but we don’t have to be there again. Gambling should be a fun time, not us desperately working backward to regain what we lost. When you go to the casino, set a budget and stick to it. If you’re looking for a legit gambling site to practice on before hitting the real thing, make sure it follows proper gambling regulations to keep your money safe.
5. Do: Respect Table Etiquette
Every game has its unspoken rules. For example, in craps, buying in during a hot roll is basically a sin. In blackjack, don’t hover over another player’s shoulder giving unsolicited advice. Just be cool, read the room, and let everyone enjoy their night.

4. Don’t: Take Your Phone Out at the Tables
Casinos don’t play around with security, and whipping out your phone at a table game is a huge no-no. Whether it’s for texting, filming, or checking your fantasy football lineup, just step away. It’s a quick way to get side-eyed by the dealer and possibly warned by security.
3. Do: Tip Your Dealers & Servers
Dealers, cocktail servers, and valet attendants aren’t just there for the vibes, they’re working hard and it’s likely most of their income relies on tips. A few bucks here and there make a difference and, fun fact, tipping your dealer can actually bring you good luck (or at least some good karma).
2. Don’t: Overdo the Drinking
Yes, in many Las Vegas casinos, drinks are complimentary while gambling. No, that doesn’t mean you should treat it like a frat party. Sloppy behavior, slurred speech, or spilling a drink on the blackjack table will get you cut off—or worse, escorted out. This is a good rule in general, honestly. Let’s leave sloppy drunkenness in 2024, guys.
1. Do: Know the Gambling Rules
Before you sit down at a table, you need a basic understanding of how the game works. There’s nothing worse than someone who expects their hand to be held. Dealers are there to deal, they’re not your personal YouTube tutorial. If you’re unsure, watch a few rounds or check out the online casino for a quick refresher and to hone your skills.
Follow these simple do’s and don’ts, and you’ll be able to enjoy the casino without committing any major faux pas. Now go forth and gamble responsibly, friends!
