Lady Luck Smiles on Sin City: January’s House Edge Delivers Record Wins
Nevada Casinos Reported $1.46 Billion In Winnings for January 2025

House Always Win
January 2025 marked a pivotal upswing for Nevada’s gambling industry, as betting casinos statewide amassed $1.46 billion in total winnings. This represents a 12.5% jump from a year prior and the second-highest gaming revenue for January in the state’s history, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board.
The feat, announced on Thursday, came just a month after cash casinos from Sin City posted their best month ever in December 2024.
Leading this impressive performance was none other than the Las Vegas Strip, which contributed $840 million toward that total. Not only does this figure reflect the Strip’s success, but it stands in stark contrast to the 2.3% drop observed in downtown Las Vegas gaming revenue during the same period.

Baccarat Bonanza: High Rollers Boost House Profits
A significant contributor to the Strip’s success was baccarat. Often described as the game of choice for high rollers, the winnings from this table game reached $214 million, with nearly all of it generated by casinos along the Strip.
According to senior analyst at the Nevada Gaming Control Board, Michael Lawton, the game’s volatility comes from the fact that it’s limited to a niche group of affluent players who can place six-figure bets on a single hand, as reported by the Las Vegas Review Journal.
Despite its relatively small player base, baccarat’s soaring 121% year-over-year revenue increase helped power the Strip to new heights.
Betting on the Banker
Baccarat’s spectacular results can be traced to three key factors:
- High-Stakes Players: Despite the rise in online casino options and bet platforms, nothing quite replicates the magic of the in-person high-stakes table.
- Increased Volume: Industry data showed a 35.8% rise in the total amounts wagered on baccarat, hitting $801.3 million. This influx of high rollers underscores the Strip’s lasting appeal, even as gambling regulations and shifting travel habits shape the market.
- Favorable House Edge: January 2025’s hold percentage for baccarat climbed to 26.74%, a substantial jump from 16.43% in January 2024. This sharpened house edge proved extremely lucrative, highlighting why the game is such a boon for major operators looking to compete with legit gambling sites.
Eventful January
While baccarat’s success made casino news headlines, the Strip did not rely on table games alone to reach these record highs. January’s broader visitor surge owed much to the Strip’s calendar of events:
- Star-Studded Concerts: Performances by artists such as Janet Jackson, The Killers, The Eagles, and Mariah Carey filled arenas and drew masses of visitors to the city’s resorts.
- Convention Comeback: Big gatherings, including CES, the World of Concrete, and the Total Product Expo drove convention attendance up by 12.8%, amounting to 628,800 visitors for the month.

Gambling Landscape
Nevada’s coffers glowed with new tax revenue, courtesy of its gaming sector as January marked the 47th month in a row that betting casinos in Nevada made more than $1 billion in gambling revenue.
According to recent reports, the global casino industry is on track to generate $477.26 billion in 2025. A big chunk of this has to do with the expansion of online gambling regulations which, in the US, accounted for $8.41 billion revenue in 2024.
Funny enough, 4 of the top 5 gambling companies by revenue for 2024 have operations in Las Vegas.
