What Players Walked Away With the Most Dough?

In casino news, the World Series of Poker is one of, or arguably the biggest, events on the circuit every year. The card sharks are playing for real money with millions – and millions – of dollars at stake. Get to the final table and you have a shot at rolling home in a contest that has prize money North of $40 million.

What Is the Biggest Pull in WSOP history?

One would think the richest pot won would have been recent. However, it isn’t exactly that. WSOP 55 in 2012. This was the year when there was the first $1 million buy-in. Of course, the event takes place at a cash casino, where else?

The winner was an Iranian-American poker star, Antonio Esfandiari. There were 48 players in the field and it came down to Esfandiari against Sam Trickett. The cards and betting psychology when the way of Esfandiari and he took home $18,346,673.

It was Esfandiari versus Trickett for the $18.3 million. Esfandiari got Trickett all-in on a Jd-5d-5c board, holding 7d-5s for three of a kind. Trickett showed Qd-6d for a flush draw. Esfandiari got his one time. The diamond never came. The turn was 3h, the river 2h, and Esfandiari was the champion.

“My heart wasn’t beating that hard actually,” Esfandiari said after his triumph. “I just went through the process and thought, ‘Here we are. This is the moment. If you fade this flush draw, you win the biggest tournament in the history of the world. Please, Jesus, one time!’ I think I used up my ‘one times’ in this tournament. I’m OK with that though.”

Daniel Colman Tops Daniel Negreanu in 2014

Colman had built a 5-1 chip advantage when he finally closed out Negreanu. Given his position with the short stack, Negreanu had to do something – anything – to try and get back into the battle. He led with A-4 against Colman’s K-Q and hit two pair on a flop of A-J-4. Colman hit his straight on the turn and eliminated Negreanu, who wasn’t able to fill up on the river (7s).

Colman didn’t do interviews after his big win, wanting the focus in the Big One for One Drop, the charity that benefited from the WSOP event.

Daniel Weinman Cashes Out for $12.1 million

The 2023 field was huge, as 10,043 players made it the biggest group going after WSOP fame. Because of the size of the field the prize money was $93,399,900.

This one saw a swift finish as opposed to other heads-up duels. The final table lasted 164 hands. Weinman was playing in the event for the 16th time.

“Final tables can go so many different ways,” he said. “You need some cards to get chips, there were a lot of good players left with a lot more tournament experience than me. But when we got down to three, I did feel like I was the best player of the three. And a couple good hands at the right time; it all came together.”

Other Big WSOP Scores

The 2006 WSOP main event saw Jamie Gold take home $12,000,000. Among those who vied for the title were Charles Barkley, Tobey Maguire, and Lennox Lewis. They were all, um, knocked out. And in 2024, Jonathan Tamayo won $10 million in a field of 10,112 entries.
