Denny Hamlin Hit the Jackpot in Vegas—But His Luck Ran Out on Race Day

When Denny Hamlin Won Big at a Casino Night Before a NASCAR Race

Slot Machines > Race Tracks

Denny Hamlin is all over casino news headlines, and honestly, he might want to reconsider his career path, because based on his weekend in Las Vegas, he’s way better at hitting jackpots than avoiding race penalties.

The NASCAR star had an absolutely insane run at a Las Vegas casino ahead of the Pennzoil 400, walking away with over $200,000 in winnings from not one, not two, but three slot machine jackpots. Hamlin first struck gold (or, well, cash) with a $126,150 win on a Buffalo video slot machine, and just when you’d think that’d be enough for any normal person, he went on to hit $85,825 and $65,300 on two more slots.

Some guys go to the casino and leave with nothing but regrets, but Hamlin left with enough money to buy a brand-new race car. He even gave a shoutout to his friend Pete, who apparently gave up a “hot seat” for him at the machine. (Pete, if you ever want to test your luck with me at the casino, my schedule is wide open).

Hot Streak in Vegas, Cold Track Finish

Unfortunately, Hamlin’s hot streak did not carry over to race day. Despite his impressive slot machine dominance, his performance at Las Vegas Motor Speedway didn’t quite impress the way one would hope. He got slapped with a speeding penalty on pit road, which sent him straight to the back of the pack. Womp womp. After that, he never fully recovered and finished in 25th place, dropping down to 12th in the NASCAR Cup Series standings.

It’s almost poetic—the guy was on fire in cash casinos, but when it came to actual horsepower, things didn’t go quite as planned. If only NASCAR races were more like poker games, where you can just keep playing until you break even or win big.

While the NASCAR schedule rolls on, Hamlin will likely be licking his wounds from the rough race finish—but let’s be real, licking them from the comfort of a $200k pile of jackpot winnings. If anything, this proves one thing… when Denny Hamlin is in Vegas, the casinos should be more nervous than the other drivers. Sorry, Denny, your new calling has found you!
