The Must-See Game of Round 3
The South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Sydney Roosters is a long rivalry and there isn’t much between them with NRL lines for Friday’s game.
The Rabbitohs are narrow favorites following a slightly better start to the year, but the Roosters always muscle up for this game.
It’s an intriguing contest and it could be a good form guide come playoff time.
Rabbitohs Face Another Tough Test
It has been a tough start for the Rabbitohs, who defeated the Sharks 27-18 in Round 1 before losing 16-10 to the Panthers.
They were outplayed last week and the scoreline didn’t reflect how easily they were beaten. To beat teams like the Panthers and Roosters, they will need to show much more passion, especially with the likes of Latell Mitchell, who is a Rocks or Diamonds player.
Despite playing on the road, sport betting markets have the Rabbitohs at -2½ for the all-Sydney battle, which could come down to the final possession.
The Rabbitohs have been the better team so far, but that doesn’t usually mean much in the derby. It comes down to who wants it more, so the likes of Mitchell, Cody Walker and Lachlan Ilias need to be much better, according to NRL news analyst Cooper Cronk.
“Cody Walker was playing frustrated”, Cronk said. “He tried everything down that left-hand side. It was a ferocious start from the Panthers. They were physical and they dominated early. They put a target on Cody Walker and ran straight at him”.
They deserve to be the sportsbook favorite but there are questions about their quality.
Roosters Hold Crisis Meeting
It’s not ideal to have a crisis meeting after just two rounds, but the Roosters needed to address their problems.
They had their pants pulled down in the opening week against the Dolphins before struggling to beat the Warriors last week, so there is significant room for improvement.
However, despite being the underdog with Las Vegas odds, they always find ways to win the local derby. They are 29-19 lifetime against the Rabbitohs, and playing with home-ground advantage is a plus.
Given the players on their roster, including James Tedesco, Daniel Tupou, Joseph Manu and Luke Keary, there are no excuses for poor form. It’s the most expensive roster in the NRL, so they need to start performing before heads roll.
It starts with the forwards, so the likes of Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Nat Butcher need to do the work up front to set up try-scoring opportunities for the electric backline.
It won’t happen without work, so the Roosters need to be better.
Roosters vs Rabbitohs Head-to-Head
The Roosters have a 29-19 advantage, but they lost the most recent meeting 30-14 at home last year in the playoffs.
They need to turn that around, but history suggests they will.
