New Zealand Gets Favored Draw
The New Zealand Warriors play an away game against the Newcastle Knights, but it’s played in Wellington, New Zealand.
NRL betting markets have the Warriors favored by 5½ points against the Knights, who are expected to be near the bottom of the NRL ladder.
Getting off to a winning start in Round 1 is crucial for the clubs.
Warriors Set to Unleash Backline
Expectations are low for the Warriors, but they at least have a talented backline that could cause the Knights plenty of problems.
The likes of Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, Adam Pompey, and Shaun Johnson are attacking threats and the Knights’ defense isn’t good.
Therefore, we expect the Warriors to put up at least 24 points in their opening game and that could be enough to come away with the win and cover the sportsbook spread.
The Warriors just need to get some go-forward play from the forward pack. There are some new names on the team and it has been their downfall for many years. However, if the likes of Wayde Egan and Tohu Harris live up to their potential, anything is possible for the Warriors.
New coach Andrew Webster expects the usual ups and downs.
“Let’s work really hard at it, let’s put ourselves in those situations, so when it happens in a game, we can draw on our training,” Webster said. “Every team’s going to have a moment where they have a lack of resilience or something doesn’t go their way, it’s how quickly you can fix that.”
Knights Not Shining
The Knights showed very little last year and they don’t have much to get excited about in 2023.
Having Kayln Ponga on the side is about the only positive we could find, so Knights fans would be in for a similar season as Warriors fans.
NRL odds have them as underdogs and that’s something to get used to. We can’t see them being favored too often over the 26 rounds, so they could provide bettors with value in points spread markets.
Getting +5½ points might not be enough, even against the Warriors. They’re playing on the road despite it being a home game, so that’s going against them.
We need to see something from the Knights in the early rounds to recommend betting on them.
Warriors vs Knights Head-to-Head
The Warriors have a slim 22-21 advantage over the Knights, but they were beaten 24-16 in the most recent meeting.
They have just a 30% record at the stadium, but the Knights have yet to play in Wellington, so that counts against them as well.
